Publisher's Description

A legendary room, with precious eighteenth-century amber panels that graced a tsarist palace in St. Petersburg, was stolen by Nazi invaders. Considered by some to be the "eighth wonder of the world," it was last seen during the chaotic scramble at the end of WWII. Official statements announced the panels were destroyed in the ravages of fire, along with much of Europe's art and antiques during the war. Case closed. But while East Germans sang freedom songs before Stasi headquarters in Leipzig, one man desperately searched through old Communist files, not knowing he would encounter a forty-seven-year-old document that just might reopen the door to the Amber Room.

Jeffrey Sinclair has made deep contacts into former Eastern Bloc nations, and he and Katya are pulled into a trail of dangerous intrigue and cover-ups as they search for the truth.

I didn't buy this book here. It came from a store many years ago. I read books by Davis Bunn before and liked them very much. However, this one peaked my interest since I, myself, am German. Anything that has to do with the Nazi era and the Holocaust is of interest to me. The story of the hunt for the whereabouts of the stolen treasure from the Amber room, so called because all the walls were covered with an amber colored gem, takes you to East Germany, several years after the re-unification in 1990. I watched it all happening here in America from my grandmother's kitchen on her table TV. It very accurately described the attitude that Eastern Germans, generally regarded as Ossies because of being from the east (Osten) had towards the West Germans. Initially everyone was happy about the re-unification till reality sank in. The East Germans wanted to catch up quickly and didn't realize that what the West had took decades of hard work after the war. While the West Germans disregarded the East Germans as hopefully backward due to Communist mismanagement of the marked economy. And the Treuhandgesellschaft, a corporation mentioned in the book, and once existing in real life, didn't garner brownie points either because of embezzlement of the funds being given and often letting factories and companies hang dry while millions were in need of good jobs. As good as the overall story is, it is even better because of Mr. Bunn's accuracy towards the realities of the time the novels are being written in. Anyone who likes a good story and is a history buff, will come to enjoy the Amber room very much so.

I enjoyed the history of this part of Eastern Europe and the treasures of its antiques and culture. The story lines intrigued me.
