Sergio Cariello was born in Brazil in 1964 and started drawing as soon as could hold a pencil. At the age of five, he already knew that he wanted to be a cartoonist. And so did everyone else--he drew on church bulletins, napkins, and every surface wtihin his reach. He currently resides in Holiday, Florida.
Sergio has worked for Marvel Comics and DC Comics. He attended the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art as well as the Word of Life Bible Institute in upstate New York.
In February, 2006, he was contacted by David C. Cook to gauge his interest in a new project; completely re-illustrating Cook's classic Picture Bible. What David C. Cook couldn't know is that Sergio had grown up in Brazil with a Portuguese translation of that very same Picture Bible. He was reading the Picture Bible before he learned to ride a bike! Even though he knew as a kid that he wanted to be a comic artist, he never would have dreamed that he would one day get to work on the Picture Bible itself!

This bible has been an absolute blessing to our family. Our 8 year old son is dyslexic, and struggles to read at his age level. He is, however, very intelligent and has no interest in reading a children's picture bible or sitting down and reading a bible where the words are an 8pt font on thin pages where the dyslexia makes the words swim all over the page. These issues become very discouraging to a young man who loves the Lord with all of his heart and loves to learn from His Word. The Action Bible brings the words to life in an amazing way with intricate and well drawn illustrations. When he struggles with the words, he can look to the illustrations for context which often helps him decode the word.
Clearly, the bible is paraphrased - and we are okay with that. For all those people that are "offended" that this bible isn't a word for word translation - I think they misunderstand the power that this tool can be. Not everyone is capable of reading the KJV translation, and they shouldn't be excluded from solitary study of our greatest resource. This bible and others like it are tools that puts the Gospel into the hands of many. It is a tool that can and will be used to further God's Kingdom. Let's not take a step back to the middle ages where you had to be a wealthy person or a "holy person" to have access to God's word. There are millions of people all over the world that will benefit from a style of bible that differs from the old school black leather bound, gold edged KJV. Just for the record, I personally take no issue with the KJV. In fact, I read it on a daily basis. I am not ignorant to the fact that it is not the translation for all people all the world over.
The book is hardback and the binding is solid. The pages are thick and have a beautiful glossy finish. The book is an absolute winner in our household and will be worn from cover to cover in no time. We count it a blessing that we cannot quantify that we discovered The Action Bible.

While I know this isn't the Bible, it definitely captures the young readers attention. What child doesn't like comic books?! It embellishes story lines to help imagine what it possibly could have been like. I believe it will also inspire children to eventually read their Bibles and study the true scriptures. Consider it an historical fiction written on true facts. It's a great stepping stool for a youngster with non believing parents!

I have an 11 yo boy and a 9 yo girl who both have an action bible. They both love it and do actually read it. Their knowledge of the bible has increased since reading it. I would recommend this book as they actually like the pictures and comic book style that their brains absorb.

My son will be 11 next month and he literally rushes home to read his Bible everyday now. We've had it for about a week. He has bought this Bible to school with him and even told me, "Mommy! I told my friends about Jesus! During lunch we were reading different sections of the Bible and I would pause and say, 'Do you know what this means?' And then I'd explain it to them! They even said they're going to tell their parents about it!" I'm so excited about my son's newfound interest in not only reading the Bible but reading PERIOD. Thank you for publishing this Bible. He still has a NKJV for studying but this is purely for pleasure! :)

I am surprised by the many positive reviews! I wonder how many actually read the book. I wasn't able to give the book its deserved rating of zero. While it vaguely follows the bible it very frequently embellishes the story being told. It gets things out of order and makes up facts. I am very happy that I read this book so that we did not erroneously buy it for our children's Sunday school class. It was so highly praised that I bought two copies, one for me and one for my niece. Now I have to try to explain to a three year old why we are taking this work of fiction away from her.
Q: Age appropriate? Regarding "The Action Bible" - what is the youngest age that this would be appropriate for?
Q: How does this compare to the Good and Evil Graphic bible? Very similiar?
Q: I need more information about the Action Bible. The Lord has laid an 18 year old deaf mute upon my heart to mentor. Because he cannot speak it's hard to know how much he comprehends. He loves watching action movies and sports, so I was wondering if this would help him comprehend the price Jesus paid for him. Is this Action Bible both old & new testament? Does it come in a video?
Q: What age group is the Action Bible for?
Q: What are the dimensions of this Bible?
Q: what version of the bible is this based from? NKJV or NIV or NLT I need to know this is based on truth or just someones thoughts

What was your motivation behind this project? To do a Life changing, Eternal value, relevant project the way I love to do: Comic Book format. When they called me, offering me to do it, I could not contain my excitement to revamp the Classic Picture Bible I read when I was a kid. This has probably been the most significant project of my life. I wish I was given more time to accomplish it but I had to do it in 3 years.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? Get entertainment and get inspired, hopefully get touched inwardly, reconnecting with the Artist of artists: Jesus Christ , who is present not only in the New Testament but in the Old testament as well. So I hope they gain life, full, never ending life.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? I know the main Character, Jewish carpenter of this story of Love and redemption. Many times, while drawing the pages I found myself in need of applying the life teaching principals within this Divine inspired script in my own private world. One of the colorists got a personal life encounter with the messiah of the story. The subject matter taps into our soul in ways that can be revolutionary for our betterment .
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? From comics, strips and graphic novels: Hal Foster's Prince Valiant, Joe Kubert's Tarzan, John Buscema's Conan , Frank Frazetta's books , Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon and many others . In the movies side: Mel Gibson's "The Passion" and Franco Zeffirelli's "Jesus of Nazareth" .
