Insightful Book
This is a book written parenting expert Rick Johnson, founder of âÂÂBetter DadsâÂÂ. This book maps out how dads can develop a healthy, closer relationship with their daughters, and gives moms insight into the important role a father plays in the life of their girls, including her relationship to her father.
The father-daughter relationship is very important in a girls life. According to Mr. Johnson, this is the one relationship that determines how she feels about herself, what kinds of men she is attracted to and how she expects to be treated by other men. I know as I read the pages of this book, I couldn't help thinking about my relationship with my Dad, who passed away 6 years ago. He was a good provider, active in our lives as little girls (I have 3 younger sisters) but once we hit preteen and teen year he became much more distant.
I agreed with some of the things Mr. Johnson shared, but other things I didn't. There are always exceptions to the rule and there is the God factor. I believe certain areas of my life could have been disastrous, were not because of God having my back so to speak.
I loved the stories he shared about his teenager daughter. She was a character!
Mr. Johnson does a thorough job of showing Dads how to help map their daughters future. Overall I believe this book is a good resource for fathers especially, but mothers will benefit as well.

A must read if you have a daughter of any age
When this book came up for review, I debated it and skipped it the first time I saw it. It wasn't until the last possible day that I had to get it did I decide I would review it. I was very hesitant 1) because it was tailored for fathers and 2) I figured it was just another typical book by someone who was going to write the same things as everyone else. With that said, you can imagine my suprise when I found myself turning page after page and actually enjoying this book! After finishing it, I told my husband that he needed to read this book and I'm keeping it on the bookshelf for when our daughter gets a little older and we hit some of these issues that we need to address.
This book hit more on adolescent girls and preteenagers. However, as a mom of 1-year-old girl, I'm glad I wrote it. I had honestly forgotten all of the things that I went through as a teen and the feelings I had. It already has me thinking of what I need to start preparing our conversations to be and what things can be addressed while she's little.
I love that this book introduces the father to his major role in the life of a daughter. God intended for the man to be a heavy influence in the home and I believe that is why he is held accountable for the things that happen inside him home. Rick Johnson doesn't shy away from the major role given to him by God. He holds fathers accountable for what they need to know and talk about with their daughters and how to have that close relationship that girls so need. Dads are responsible for their daughters!
He uses some examples of him and his daughter throughout the book, as well as letters written from other women. He begins by walking the dad through what happens at puberty (and acknowledges that these things are things that dads would rather not know about), the importance of knowing these things, what happens when a father isn't a major part of a daughter's life, what happens when a father is a major part of a daughter's life, and the life-long implications of a present father that loves, cares for, and nurtures his "sweet baby girl."
After reading different paragraphs to my husband, we both agreed that he has a tall order in front of him. If you really think about all the work that will go into building that relationship with your daughter, it's a lot. But it's well worth it.
Reading though the book, I saw my own father. I saw the love, nurture, and stability that I had and could easily compare it with how I am different because of my loving father. I know that's not the norm these days, but I'm so thankful that God gave me a father that took his job seriously, just like Rick has taken his job as a father seriously. Every father of girls needs to read this book. I, myself, am going to be buying his book on mothers/sons, called That's My Son.

The Importance of A Father's Love and Protection
ThatâÂÂs My Girl by Rick Johnson is one of the most comprehensive books on father/daughter relationships and how that relationship affects a daughterâÂÂs life forever. Though Rick did not become a Christian until his children were eight and ten, God has used this man to encourage dads to become deeply involved with their daughters. An earthly fatherâÂÂs love displays the love of God the Father to girls. This is imperative for a girl to develop confidence and empower them to become the daughter of God that she was meant to become.
Does that mean every dad should be perfect? No! It means for them to seek God and His Word to guide their daughters in Godly virtues.
The chapter titles include:
What are little girls made ofâÂÂbiological and psychological make-up
Her fatherâÂÂs influenceâÂÂthe power of a father words
Communicating with the female speciesâÂÂhow to listen
Bonding with girlsâÂÂtime and healthy affection
What a girl needs from her fatherâÂÂunconditional love and truth
Danger, Will Robinson!âÂÂemotional health
Protecting herâÂÂphysically, emotionally, mentally, and sexually
Uh-Oh! SheâÂÂs becoming a womanâÂÂher virtue and your views on dating issues
Character trainingâÂÂcharacter traits all girls need
The Father BlessingâÂÂspiritual development and the father blessing
All these titles may seem familiar, but RickâÂÂs comments and examples address the issues much more deeply than I even expected. His book is personal and profound. This is a must-read for all men and fathers.
The only topic I would have liked to have seen included is homosexuality. ItâÂÂs rampant today, and God has very strong commands on the matter.
I am also aware of another book by this author that would follow suit with this one, which I have not read yet, but willâÂÂThatâÂÂs My Son. So if you need more guidance in raising your children, or your church is doing a class on parenting, I feel confident in recommending RickâÂÂs books.
