Publisher's Description

Gooding, Texas, is about to gain a double blessing--a veterinarian and a doctor. But when siblings Enoch and Taylor Bestman arrive, the discovery that Taylor is a lady doctor has the town up in arms. Especially Karl Van der Vort, the town blacksmith, who becomes the first patient...against his will.

Though hesitant to believe in Taylor's doctoring skills, Karl finds himself oddly protective of this surprising woman who dares to drive about town on her own, wearing the color red, for heaven's sake! Taylor, on the other hand, wants only to prove that doctoring is her life's calling, despite the town's opposition. The result? Pride meets attraction head-on, and sparks begin to fly.

Author Bio

Cathy Marie Hake is a licensed nurse who worked for many years in an oncology unit before shifting her focus to perinatal care. The author of over twenty novels, she lives with her husband in Anaheim, California.

Publisher's Weekly

Christian fiction writer Hake, who is also a nurse, offers her fans a mixed blend of fun, witticism and romance and a theme of medicine, with scenarios involving the care and keeping of man and beast. Against a backdrop of male chauvinist prejudice and smalltown small-mindedness, twins Enoch and his sister Taylor Bestman, veterinarian and medical doctor respectively, arrive in Gooding, Tex., with the best of intentions. What they find is a great deal of anti-female sentiment when it’s discovered that Taylor, the new medical doctor, is a woman. Determined to prove herself, Taylor takes on whatever the little town can throw at her and slowly wins over most of the people’s affections, including that of a stubborn blacksmith who views medicine as an inappropriate profession for a woman. Hake’s text is sweet, to be sure; still, the plot resolves all too neatly and swiftly, almost like an unlikely miracle cure. (Aug.) Copyright 2009 Reed Business Information.

A good story, intelligent banter that had me giggling, a touch of suspense, and a woman determined to use the talent God gave her in spite of other's opinions. That Certain Spark by Cathy Marie Hake has quite a lot to offer for readers who love historical fiction or romantic comedies.

"Heard a bunch of knotheads traded lead at the Nugget," Velma said as she entered the house. "Reckon we're gonna have to patch you boys up outta the goodness of our hearts because you're just too plain stupid to stay out of trouble." (page 196)

Gooding, Texas, is looking to hire both a doctor and a veterinarian, and they find both in twins Enoch and Taylor Bestman. The problem: they failed to read the part that clearly states Taylor is a woman, and in 1892, that is still largely unacceptable.

    What I Liked

The banter between Taylor and Karl, one of the town's smithies, is often laugh-out-loud funny. Each make good points against the other, but the debates carry on, usually with each giving in to the other just slightly.

The pace was good, as was the timing. A couple of the transformations seemed a little rushed near the end, but overall things seemed to happen as they naturally would. Some people conceded to the new doctor easily enough, others struggled a bit, and still others struggled tremendously. But things came to a good resolution within three months, the length of the books. Not everyone came to the good doctor's side, which is appropriate given human nature.

The scenes seemed realistic for the time period and location, and she did a good job of aiding in enough medical details to make the story realistic without overwhelming the reader with too much gore.

    What I Didn't Like - SPOILER ALERT

The main bad guy didn't sit well with me. He never showed himself within the story, and even though he'd previously been run out of town, I found it difficult to believe that he apparently came to town more than once during the story.

A couple of times, I got lost in who people were. I couldn't remember if they'd been introduced before or who they were in relation to the town. Once or twice I also got lost in who was speaking. This surprised me as I don't remember having this problem in others books of Ms. Hake's that I've read.

The Bottom Line - 4 stars

This book was an enjoyable read, and even with my minor issue with the bad guy, I thoroughly enjoyed the story. If you enjoy historical romances with some great laughter moments, then I recommend giving this book a try.

A good read! A good laugh! A good story!

I loved this book as much as I did the first ones of the same series. Couldn't wait to get started and never regretted buying nor reading it.

What a great ride to Gooding Texas with twin doctors! Enoch (male) and Taylor (female) - one a vet and the other treats people - guess you can't guess who treats who! Yes, and that is just the beginning of this delightful journey! The battle is not just being a woman doctor in a man's world.. but about building trust and relationships in a new town.

But there is even more adventure with Cathy Marie Hake's writing - the plot thickens and adventure (and romance) builds. The who-done-it has a surprising end. The characters that develop in Karl and Piet are wonderfully crafted and my favorite!

Another successful heart-healing book that delves into how to belong in a world that doesn't seem to want you though they need you! You will find a great adventure and that you belong in Gooding, Texas!

Wow! I just finished That Certain Spark, and I enjoyed it. I found the story of Dr. Taylor Bestman interesting and enthralling and well worth the read. However, sometimes I wanted to knock a few heads together because some of the characters in the book were rather small-minded in their thinking about a female physician. I certainly enjoy returning to Gooding, Texas, which each new character Hake brings there. The women who lead the stories are friendly, smart, caring, fierce, and well-written. Taylor is no exception. As the twin sister of a veternarian brother, Taylor has come to Gooding to fulfill a four-year contract as the town doctor. She is well-trained, full of wisdom, ingenious, compassionate, and prepared. She has a calling on her life in the field of medicine and takes her oath very seriously. There are those in Gooding, particularly men, who would have her ridden out of town on a rail simply because she's a woman and can have no actual ability as a doctor. The story has some twists and turns, some romance, some tears, some cheers, and a message of redemption. I highly recommend this latest Gooding novel.
