Life inevitably brings loss and pain. While it is possible to live through these times in redemptive ways, this requires effort and conscious choice at a time when energy and motivation are in short supply and faith is often besieged by doubt.
Drawing from her own life and many years of counseling experience, Gay Hubbard offers patterns of effective thinking, practical daily activities, and the discipleship of self-care. Above all, she shows how to know Christ, the power of His resurrection, the fellowship of His suffering, and, in this knowing, become like Him. It is a prospect to strengthen the weariest pilgrim, worn with the worst of pain.”
Dr. Gay Hubbard has spent more than thirty years as a Christian counselor and is presently in private counseling practice in Colorado. She is a teacher, writer, speaker, and counselor. She is the author of Women: The Misunderstood Majority and co-author with Alice Mathews of Marriage Made in Eden.

Because of this, it is not a book that can be read quickly. It is best if it is read in small segments to give your mind time to absorb the information and thoughts.
M. Gay Hubbard provides a comprehensive analysis of pain and suffering in her book, "More Than An Aspirin." By background she is a counselor and has counseled many people with various life issues causing pain. I found the book more in dealing with pain of an emotional type rather than physical but much of what she says can be applied to both. Doesn't our physical pain cause us emotional issues as well.
One of my favorite sections of the book is her chapter on praying through the pain. She uses the psalms and scriptures as examples and gives some reliable guidelines for praying during the tough times.
Whether we have a chronic illness or not, all of us experience pain at some point in our lives and how we manage that time of pain can greatly effect our lives and our relationships with those around us. This book gives some pretty dependable information to help us deal with pain and trauma in our lives.
I would find this difficult to read in the middle of a major crises due to the depth of the material and the inability to process the information at that time. However, I think it would be very helpful to read when the crises is over or before a crisis to gain insight into the depths of your pain and suffering.
I received this free book from Discovery House Publishers for review. I was not obligated to provide a positive review. The opinions in this review are strictly my own.
Emmanuel4 Stars Out Of 5April 19, 2010EmmanuelDr. Hubbard, began the book with "Pain has many faces, but these faces often wear a mask". This assertion couldn't be more true as most people cleverly put on a faade to mask the strain of the real weight underneath. Once the human nerve buttons are touched, we react offensively with our favourite verb,'why?':picking up a grudge with God, and blaming ourselves simultaneously I quite loved the way Dr. Hubbard used a wide range of true- life accounts besides the story of Job et al.Interestingly however,"God neither promised any of His creations a pain-free lifetime nor an instant alleviation of such pain" as we journey through life. An avoidance, or the numbing delusion,of pain in itself defeats the cause of managing and rising above it unless we learn to see it from God's perspective. Regardless of whether its the loss of a precious child, the dissolution of a relationship, or even as trivial as the loss of a cellphone may sound; our reaction to pain is similar. Yet,"Loss is not fatal" as Hubbard puts it, "for we either choose to live through it", and allow God lead us to a good place on the other side of the temporal adversity, or we allow ourselves to be swallowed by it!Whatever the pain we'd be undergoing, observing it in the light of the Scripture below from God's perspective would certainly bring some relief to our aching souls. Not forgetting that Aspirin is a temporal pain-reliever: God alone holds the keys to our cure!
