Texas, 1874. Years ago, Will McMillan had fought in the open, next to his Captain, Clayton Proffitt. Now hes waging another war undercover, pretending to be a member of the notorious Walton Gang.
But when a hostage situation goes awry and an innocent woman is in the middle of the fray, Will knows he must protect her no matter what happens. Even if his cover is blown. Even if they risk being killed by his gang or by the lawmen on their trail. Even if the woman hes risking everything for will never love him back.
Shelley Gray takes readers through the train compartments and across the winter streets of Kansas with Jamie, Will, and Scout. From the beginning, readers follow Jamies kidnapping and her escape with Will. Every chapter is told from the perspective of one of the three main characters. Will and Jamie's relationship grows every day. Their respect and care for each other makes readers wonder how they will part ways. The most unforgettable moments are the ones which Jamie spends on the train. The author illustrates the harshness of sinful men toward an innocent woman when they admit she may be raped and killed. Jamie asks God for strength and a quick death, acknowledging she may die. Will is torn between his growing love and the past mistakes he cannot forget. Jamie fears her reputation is ruined because of her kidnapping. She is seen as a tainted and unworthy woman. They struggle with their unknown futures and their value as Gods creations.
The author also introduces another character struggling with self-worth, Kitty. Kitty approaches Scout in his search for Will and Jamie, and asks him to kill her sexually abusive stepfather. Instead, he takes her and tries to find a home where she could start a new life. Scout tells her God has not given up on her. He explains to Kitty that she must have faith, both a faith in God and a faith that there is something better in the world than what they know. Through Scout, the author illustrates Hebrews 11:1, "Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see." Scout's faith and encounter with Kitty lead him to choose a purpose.
Throughout the novel, Jamie, Will, and Scout figure out where they are supposed to be and what they want to do with their lives. Shelley Gray illustrates the protection and value God holds over His people. Scripture is not directly quoted, yet the characters take comfort in God's Word. Women looking for a novel that realistically depicts sin, death, and redemptive grace would enjoy this book. - Sarah C. Cespedes, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
MishkaSpruce Grove, CanadaAge: 25-34Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Drama~!August 28, 2014MishkaSpruce Grove, CanadaAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 4Gray has an amazing plot, filled with amazing characters and high action drama. The settings are described without overmuch detail while still communicating place, and the historical details themselves are the same while describing necessities we modern women might not otherwise consider and how they impact the story. I also like how the book (a second in a series) uses characters that were previously mentioned in the first book--it kind of creates a more familiar community while you are reading.
There are a few issues I have with her story. First, the characters are christian but it is this peripheral awareness of their christianity. The character's faith doesn't "grab" at you. Second, the romance almost seems second place to the drama and plot--which are both amazing, but if you want the warm fuzzy romance grab a different book. Third, after having read the first book, I see a pattern in scenes and developments. And I do believe that some of the details get a little altered between the books even though they are using a group of characters that we have read about previously.
I would recommend this book, but tell my friends it's more plot than romance.
Debbie from ChristFocusHarrison, ARAge: 35-44Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Romance and dangerJuly 23, 2014Debbie from ChristFocusHarrison, ARAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4You don't need to read the first book in this series to understand this one as it only briefly mentions the characters of the previous novel. With the threat of rape and death throughout much of the book, it was full of suspense scenes. The romance part was pretty predictable. It was good enough to keep me reading to the end (unlike the first book in the series), yet still I didn't feel highly engaged in the story. I felt I already knew what was going to happen next. I was more interested in Scout's story as it was much less predictable.
There were occasional "bloopers" in the writing. For example, Scout left a girl alone in a bedroom and heard her move furniture in front of the door to block it. Yet when he comes back, he acts like that never happened--he simply unlocks the door and enters, not expecting or noticing that the furniture isn't blocking the door. These bloopers confused me about the timeline--did I really understand her writing earlier in the story? So I'd check, and yes I did. I'm surprised these bloopers weren't caught and fixed by an editor.

In book two, he is one of two central figures that performs the orders the boss of the gang demands. The other character is a mystery from the start. The Walton Gang takes over a train where one passenger, Jamilyn, is traveling to reach Kansas to meet her remaining family members, having just buried her parents two months earlier.
As time progresses on the train, Jamilyn is confused by both Scout and Will's words and actions, yet the ruthlessness of other men in gang is never doubted. In time, Will realizes he has to get the woman off the train if she is to survive, but the snow along with freezing temperatures present an equal challenge of not surviving. Through the long trail to what Will believes is safety for Jamilyn, his heart is in a battle with his mind as he struggles with his feeling for her since he considers her not available.
I love westerns as different authors bring their own flavor to the stage of the west along with all the action, adventure and romance. Plus a couple of the characters share their faith, Scripture and pray. What is hard is learning the loose ends of the first and second books continue on to another installment, A Texan's Choice. There are threads of mystery, romance and an unknown future of the main characters in the books. The scenes described are easy to get lost in, and the tension that builds in the novel had me anticipating the time spent in book three! I hope the author continues to write in this genre as she does an excellent job weaving a great western book!

Not a cordial christian romance book, rather a gutsy raw novel. I'll re-read this one!
