Book Summary: Christians are commanded to grow. Once we are saved, spiritual fruit should be a natural byproduct. If the fruit isn't there, the growth we are supposed to display is not happening. Yet many Christians find it difficult to bear fruit because their branches are weak -- the old patterns of sin and bad habits creep back in and choke off the growth that should be taking place. So what do you do when your spiritual fruit isn't what it should be? You do what you would with the fruit of any type of tree: free it from what inhibits its growth by finding weak branches and cutting them off. Here, Jay Adams unpacks the teaching of Jesus in Matthew 5 and shows us how to use the principle of radical amputation to develop spiritual fruit, putting on holy patterns of living by putting off our sinful ones. The Resources for Biblical Living booklet series addresses a wide range of practical life issues in a straightforward, down-to-earth, and most of all, biblical manner.
Review: I found this to be a booklet that was easy to read, well written and informative. In this world of the church in the US struggling with historic Christianity it was refreshing to read how to deal with the temptations of this world. I found the examples and the ideas to be plain and blunt with little room for confusion. I enjoyed the variety of examples and how it was nonjudgmental in its approach. The idea that we will never cease to be sinners but can move toward the Light of the World a most helpful idea to hold onto.

Putting off and putting on to grow
Ok, full disclosure: Jay Adams is one of my favorite authors (right up there with R.C. Sproul). I think he is a great lecturer, great writer and great teacher of Nouthetic counseling.
That said, on to "Temptation": As a Christian, we constantly struggle with one very important thing: lack of spiritual growth. We wake up each day, go about our lives, day after day, month after month, and suddenly we realize that we are spiritually stagnant, and inside it feels like a dry, arid desert. We don't grow in the Lord as we should and we become impatient, sad, and desperate to see changes in us and hoping that others can see great changes in us too. Dr. Adams offers great insight into what's really going on, why this happens and what we can do about it. So, what can you do about it? Dr. Adams explains that leaving behind our sinful ways is not enough, we must replace them with righteous ones (Col. 3:5âÂÂ10), and that this process of is what leads to Christian growth.
This short booklet (30 pages or so) will lead you in examining your life, and getting to the core of your problem; in knowing what to do and and how to do it. It gives you hope in knowing that as you do your part in living righteously, God works wonderful things in your life, and you will see it. It's very well written, in simple terms; everything well explain, and to the point. Full of biblical truths, biblical approaches and practical solutions.

You will find something to help you in this book
This book by Jay E. Adams is part of the Resources for Biblical Living series. Temptation: Applying Radical Amputation to Life's Sinful Patterns is the title and exactly describes what is in this book.
Once you are saved you begin to grow in the Lord. If you are not growing it is time to root out the issues that are taking you away from the Lord. Learning how to turn away from the temptations is the general direction of this book.
This author is well known and all his books are worth reading. This particular one is not one of my favorites but there is a lot to learn from it. I did like that it was short and a fast read. If you are struggling with your relationship with the Lord and want to grow closer to him this book has a lot of information to help you do that.
