Christian couples, I regret to say, aren't always all that honest about their marital woes. Major rifts or minor squabbles are usually not the topic of chatter in the church lobby. Which is why Ashleigh's book is so refreshing! She so bravely tells her and Ted's story and the stories of other couples who have had to muscle through the stuff of marital oneness (which anyone who has been married longer than 5 minutes knows is no easy feat). It's about TIME someone piped in with honesty, transparency, and depth. Most married readers will be able to say, "I've SO done that" or "I've SO said that". Prepare to relate.
I Loved this book! I usually read fiction, but got totally hooked on the author's conversational style of writing! I came away with the same connected feeling with Ashleigh as I do when I sink into a fictional character. Making personal connections with everyday real life and the transparency into her marriage has really helped me to translate the suggestions from the pages to my own relationship with my husband. I have already recommended this book to several couples and will be including this as a wedding present in the near future for young couples. The team approach and sports analogies make it easy for men to relate. Highly recommend for newlyweds or those that have been in trenches together for many years!!
Ashleigh has a fantastic writing style that immediately grabs your attention from page 1. She is incredibly transparent as she shares wisdom she has learned over the course of her marriage. Her husband adds an extra dose of humor as he inserts his thoughts about what she is writing about at various points in each chapter.
You won't want to miss hearing how they met, what in the world the Olympic sport of curling has to do with marriage, and how they overcome some incredibly tough moments.
I, like another reviewer, am hoping to go through the book a second time with my husband, and I look forward to the questions she provides at the end of each chapter that help the reader apply the material to his/her own life.
Ashleigh has a home run with this book, and I am certain that marriages will be strengthened if couples take the time to digest and apply the suggestions she provides.
Upon finishing Team Us, I immediately planned a reread alongside my husband. Ashleigh Slater writes about marriage with such a deep vulnerability, filling her chapters with personal stories of challenges that she and her husband have experienced, and how they've overcome them. This is a challenging and personal read. It has messed with the status quo of my marriage, pushing some buttons in areas in which I have weaknesses as a wife. Reading this book feels like I'm having dinner with a wise friend who is willing to share her marriage story and intentionally encouraging me to strengthen mine.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Ashleigh is very transparent with the common everyday struggles that come about when two lives become one shared life! It is not always easy, but with the right perspective it can be fun and rewarding. This book allows us to share in the beginnings of a treasured marriage as if we are sitting in a cafe having a chat over a cup of coffee. It will encourage you and give you a fresh vision for approaching those "little conflicts" that come up often in marriage.
