ToriWatertown, NYAge: 35-44Gender: female2 Stars Out Of 5Not worth the time.January 5, 2013ToriWatertown, NYAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 2Value: 1Meets Expectations: 1I'm truely sorry to be the buzz kill of this resource. I wanted to like it. I expected more from it based on the reviews and forums I have read in regard to it. I didn't learn anything new from this. The story chart in this resource can be found online, probably at many different sites. There are many different sources online that contain socratic questions and list of books, there is nothing particularly special about the questions, or the list of books.
The advice garnered from this set can be read in greater depth from the book Reading Strands by National Writing Institute, which is available right here on CB. I also like Deconstructing Penguins: Parents, Kids, and the Bond of Reading, it does a better job doing what this resource is suppose to be about.
The highlight of the longwinded first CD is to read Cliff Notes for the background of the author. The next three CD's go over the story elements with a story element chart a few times. The end of the last CD explains the use of picture books and teaching one element at a time. If you know the basic elements of a story, and can fill out a story chart in front of your children, you don't need this.
The recording was very amateur as well in a technical sense. He didn't seem comfortable at first in the seminar. I believe the seminar needs to be recorded again, professionally. The whole concept didn't seem well developed, and is riding on the good name of IEW. It may be worth the investment if it had an audience of children (instead of adults) working through the story chart, with his wife, rather than him, I have a hunch he is not the exciting one in the family.
I feel like I have been taken by a snake oil salesman.
Toni Stacy5 Stars Out Of 5September 27, 2010Toni StacyWe have just started using this but so far we like it. It is very friendly for newbies also the DVD's help with teaching the lessons.
LB5 Stars Out Of 5January 19, 2008LBThis is one of the most valuable resources I have found for our Home school. Teaching clearly and enthusiastically, Mr. Andrews lays out the Socratic method for you and your children, so you and they can truly enjoy the depth of the Classics! A MUST BUY, in my opinion! Don't forget to purchase Andrew Pudewa's Writing Intensive, which is the perfect compliment to it.
Q: Is this a curriculum that is designed for a full year of study? If so, is it divided into chapters or themes etc.?
This curriculum is divided into themes and is designed to be used in multiple grade levels over an extended period of time. Once the student learns the techniques for literary analysis they can continually apply those techniques over their years of schooling using the reading lists and resources provided with the curriculum.
