Product Description

It's 1969. Newlyweds Jemmabeth and Spencer Chase deserve every happiness. After all, they've been in love since the first grade. With Spencer home at last from the Vietnam War and with Jemma's near-brush with death, it was about time for the two to tie the knot. But can even bliss stub its toe in the realities of everyday life? Especially with ex-boyfriend Paul and Missy Blake, "The Cleave," determined to wrestle their way between the darlings of the Texas Panhandle? Come on in to Nedra's Beauty Parlor & Craft Nook and sit a spell. Exchange a story or two. You'll be glad you did.

Author/Artist Review

Author: Sharon McAnear
Located in: Colorado
Submitted: July 21, 2009

Tell us a little about yourself.  Sharon McAnear grew up in the Texas Panhandle at a time when small towns and farms still thrived, as did the comforting presence of extended families. Her grandparents were a constant source of joy and spiritual inspiration to her. They, like many others of that period, demonstrated uncommon wit and grit in their daily lives, and those particular traits are given high regard in her writing.

What was your motivation behind this project?  So many of those small towns are vacated now, but Sharon believes their stories need to be told. The Jemma Series portrays the abiding spirit of church-going farm folks, and reveals their social attitudes, both good and bad, during the late 50's, 60's, and early 70's.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  Readers will view that era through the perspective of its bright-eyed youth, as well as through the sometimes weary, yet mostly wiser, eyes of its elderly. The series is meant to help us all pause, reconsider, laugh, and count our blessings - though not necessarily in that order.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  The rich language and wisdom of the characters became more evident to her as the novels evolved. To Sharon, this revelation indicated that the role models for these fictional characters were even wiser and more articulate than she had first recalled.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  Sharon enjoys the works of Jan Karon, Philip Gulley, Olive Ann Burns, Anne Lamott, Alice Munro, Mark Twain, and a host of best-selling authors and humorists. In addition to writing, Sharon is a reader, a hiker, and a frequent visitor to Britain. She confesses to lovingly wallpapering her family¬ís downstairs bathroom with 263.5 (at last count) Far Side cartoons one snowy weekend in the late nineties. Gary Larson, however, had nothing at all to do with the cover photos for her Jemma novels. They are the author¬ís own work.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  Sharon McAnear lives in Colorado with her periodically dramatic family. She is currently plotting her next series, and perhaps sneaking added inspiration from wallpaper.
