Teri5 Stars Out Of 5Worth ReadingSeptember 15, 2015TeriQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I enjoyed reading this book. Even though it was part of a series, I hadn't read the others but never felt lost or confused with what was taking place. It worked very well as a stand-alone story. I will definitely be looking for more of Tracie Peterson's books.
nomer15Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Great ConclusionJanuary 11, 2014nomer15Gender: female"Taming the Wind" by Tracie Peterson in the concluding book in the "Land of the Lone Star" trilogy. This book follows the story of Carissa Lowe, a young widow with a small daughter named Gloria. After her terrible, abusive first marriage, she is afraid to trust her heart with anyone. Relying heavily on her sister, Carissa seeks to be as independent as possible. Tyler Atherton was the man who saved Carissa's life when her husband attempted to end her life. A former Confederate soldier, he's lost his family's ranch due to his loyalties in the war. He attempts to get back his ranch with the help of his friend, Will Barnett.
The story was captivating and the characters were well developed. I loved how this story drew in characters from the other two books in the trilogy and neatly wrapped up the series. There was a bit of predictability in the story, but there was enough action to help offset that aspect.
Overall, the story was well done and I felt it was a great conclusion to this series. As a long-time fan of Peterson's work, I felt that a couple of her most recent series weren't quite up to par, but I really enjoyed this series and felt it was a bit more up to her usual standard.
(I've received this complimentary book from Bethany House Publishers through the Book Blogger program in exchange for a review. A positive review was not required and the views expressed in my review are strictly my own.)
ElleCanadaAge: 18-24Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5January 9, 2014ElleCanadaAge: 18-24Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4This novel was an solid read. For me, there was a familiarity that came with this novel. It's a part of a series (three novels so far) so seeing the same characters from the first and second book made me feel more connected to the characters. This story tackled very serious issues such as unforgiveness, pain and hurt from broken hearts, and more. Even though it was mellow at some points, joy and laughter is brought forth from Carissa's daughter. Her childlike honesty and carefree attitude brings light in the mellow times.
I particularly enjoyed that the men in the town left to go on the cattle drive because we were able to truly see a discipleship happen in each one of the women - especially in Carissa. They read bible passages together, they learnt, cried and prayed for each other and it was an incredible image! Allowing the men to physically leave made the women rely solely on God. The truths that Carissa learnt were what kept her courageous in the most difficult situations. There were ‘God moments' all throughout the book which ultimately directed the reader to remember or understand that God is the orchestrator of what seems impossible.
Once again, Tracie demonstrates that a love story without the display of the faithfulness and goodness of God is one that is not worth telling. Thank you for continuously sharing of this message of the confident hope we find only in Jesus!
A great thanks to Bethany House for the free copy of Taming the Wind by Tracie Peterson!
melzNYAge: 25-34Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5A Great Read!December 1, 2013melzNYAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This is the third book in the Land of the Lone Star series. The story centers on Carissa Lowe, a widow and mother of a little girl. Carissa's past with her abusive husband haunts her along with the tragic events that resulted in the loss of her husband. The author does a good job in explaining briefly the events that occurred to Carissa (being the fact that Book Two was about these events) which lead to her fearfulness and caution. Tyler Atherton is very much a part of Carissa's story. He saved her life on that tragic day in Carissa's life and at the beginning of the story it is discovered that Tyler cares very much for Carissa and her daughter.
The author does a wonderful job describing these two characters and telling their separate yet intertwined journeys. So many these are reflected in this book such as forgiveness, trust, and love. I found that it wasn't necessary to read the first two books in order to read this one. This was an entertaining read filled with adventure, suspense, and romance. Overall, this was an enjoyable read.
Jolene3 Stars Out Of 5Just never really hooked meApril 9, 2013JoleneQuality: 3Value: 3Meets Expectations: 2Carissa Lowe's first marriage ended with a disaster that would have taken her life if not for the heroic actions of Tyler Atherton. Little more than two years later, Carissa finds herself living near attractive, vengeful Tyler. As Tyler struggles with his father's murder, Carissa is bound by fear and mistrust. Although drawn to each other, their inability to move forward with their lives holds them apart. It will take a cattle drive, the danger of the Texas frontier, and a miracle to hold them together. Taming the Wind by Tracie Peterson is the third book in the Land of the Lone Star Series. Somehow, I read the first book, Chasing the Sun, but missed the second book, Touching the Sky. Taming the Wind worked reasonable well as a stand alone novel since some background information was given. However, even with that information, I felt a disconnect from the main characters. Perhaps it would have been different if I had previously read the second book.
To me, Tyler Atherton was the shining character of the book. When the romance element of the story seemed to stagnate, Tyler's personal struggles and the resulting development kept the story moving. In addition to the romance and character development, there was an element of suspense. Unfortunately, during the height of the suspense, I put the book down and didn't read it for several days. The plot just never hooked me and when I should have been glued to the story, there was no pressure drawing me back to the book. I do love the gorgeous cover of this book, but for the aforementioned reasons, I recommend renting it from the library before buying.
