Deborah Smith Pegues, author of the popular 30 Days to Taming Your Tongue (over 500,000 copies sold), now offers friendly, doable money management strategies in 30 Days to Taming Your Finances.
Giving readers the benefit of her many years' experience as a public accountant and certified behavioral consultant, Deborah sheds light on the emotional and practical side of putting finances in order. The wealth of information readers will gather includes how to
- forget past financial mistakes and start fresh
- stop emotional spending and still be content
- fund future objectives with confidence
Each day's offering will inspire and motivate readers to savor the freedom that comes with organizing, valuing, and sharing their resources wisely.
Although short at 157 pages, this book shares a vast amount of ways to save dimes and dollars. The author suggests you become a do-it-yourselfer: rake your own leaves, do your own manicures. She recommends reducing food costs: buy in bulk, cook in bulk, eat out wisely by not splitting a bill when you don't drink alcohol, and do take home a doggie bag. Buy wedding gifts whenever appliance stores have sales, so that you can get a $40 skillet for $10 instead of giving someone a $25 gift card.
Conversely, Pegues warns when you should not underspend. Pay for professionals when you need care or good advice, such as CPAs, attorneys, and physicians, rather than go to cut-rate charlatans. Also, learn to identify your emotional reasons for spending -- boredom, anger, depression, frustration, or insecurity. Get a grip on them. Furthermore, be aware that just because someone "claims" to be a Christian, it doesn't mean you shouldn't still do your research, get a reference and guarantee, and carefully check the product or service before spending your money on it.
This book has four appendices with budgets, spending records, and financial profiles. The book pulls no punches in strongly advocating biblical principles. It quotes lessons from Jesus, promotes honesty, and begins each chapter with a verse of Scripture. It's readable, pragmatic, biblically accurate, and non-threatening. Dr. Dennis E. Sheila Morton5 Stars Out Of 5January 13, 2009Sheila MortonThis book is a quick read and full with excellent information. Instead of putting a band-aid on your finances Ms. Pegues discusses deeper layers of how you got to where you are and how to solve it. Loved it so much I have my whole church reading it.
