step discovery of a richer, more honest prayer life
using the book of Psalms.
You know what your prayers ought to be and what you want them to be. You desire intimate, honest, and authentic communication with your Father in heaven that expresses the joys, sorrows, victories, and even defeats that make up everyday life. But the realities of stress wage war against our spiritual aspirations and prayer becomes a mere duty laced with empty phrases that really don't communicate our hearts.
In Talking Back to God Lynn Anderson leads you through the Psalms to prayer that will very likely draw you to your knees and lift your heart to heights you never expected. Put aside old stereotypes about prayer and follow Anderson into a renewed and refreshed communication that includes honest words of pain, passion, doubt, faith, and trust in a Father who knows us better than we know ourselves.
Jesus and the earliest Christians dearly loved the Psalms; yet, strangely, the contemporary church has generally neglected them. It is high time the Psalterthe first prayer book and hymn book of the churchis restored to its central place in our private prayers and in the churchs worship. Lynn Andersons eloquent Talking Back to God can greatly help with this mission. Anderson testifies in touching and personal ways to the transforming power of the Psalms. The book is rich for many reasonsnot least because its honest, soul-stirring insights flow from a sincere, Psalm-saturated consciousness. Talking Back to God is at once an eloquent defense of the Psalms, an inspirational narrative of a great man of God, a practical guide to personal prayer, and a soaring celebration of Gods faithfulness in times of crisis and trial. Darryl Tippens, Provost, Pepperdine University; author of Pilgrim Heart: The Way of Jesus in Everyday Life
The book in your hand will tell you something you like and something you don't like. It will tell you that there are no short cuts and five-minute magical routines that will automatically usher you into spiritual formation land. But it will also tell you this: there is only one way to grow in our relationship with God and that is to pray, and the one sure method of learning to pray is to pray with the Psalms. In the middle of your Bible is a collection of prayers; God gave them to you to learn how to pray. Scot McKnight, Karl A. Olsson Professor in Religious Studies, North Park University, Chicago; author of The Jesus Creed and The Blue Parakeet
At a time when people clamor for quick solutions and for high-voltage experiences, the ancient Psalms invite us to a rugged, determined pilgrimage toward God. Weary of the fast fixes that haven't touched the deepest places of your heart? Then grab a copy of these ancient prayers and let Lynn Andersonone of the most trusted spiritual friends of my lifeguide you through these poignant, insightful pages. Mike Cope, Heartbeat Ministries
Lynn, like David, speaks boldly to Godoften through the Psalms. Talking Back to God can help each of us pursue a more open and intimate relationship with our Heavenly Father. Ron Miller, Chairman, Board of Regents, University of Missouri
Vintage Lynn Anderson. Praying the Psalms, talking back to Godwhat a profound but simple concept. Praying the Psalms allows me to voice the unspeakable. A valuable tool for centering your life on God. Frank Oldham, PhD, retired bank CEO & former Chairman, Board of Trustees, University of Arkansas
Rather than latching on to the latest and greatest spiritual practice of the day, Lynn Anderson reminds us that we are spiritually shaped by God's Word, and arguably no genre of Scripture is more formative than Psalms. Talking Back to God provides us with the spiritual disciplines of reading, praying, meditating, and contemplating the magnificent poetry and life-changing words of the Psalms. I am thankful for this excellent book. David Wray, professor of Christian Formation, Abilene Christian University

Eva ScottGreensboro, NCAge: 55-65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5A How-To-Use-the-Psalms Study GuideAugust 29, 2012Eva ScottGreensboro, NCAge: 55-65Gender: femaleThis book is not a study of the book of Psalms as far as going through each Psalm and explaining it. This book gives you ways to use the Psalms to go deeper into prayer with God.
The book includes: 1) questions at the end of each chapter to go deeper in using the Psalms, 2) a section with snippets of people who share how they used the Psalms in their prayer lives, and 3) a section on how to study the Psalms over a period of five months.
The last section is one that the author suggests you use to start a study group to mentor others on what you have learned and/or to go through the Psalms together to grow your relationship with God.
