By spending quality time with her daughter, a Christian mom can protect her against peer pressure to mature too quickly and guide her toward true, life-enhancing friendships.
Dannah Gresh, bestselling author of Six Ways to Keep the "Little" in Your Girl and creator of the Secret Keeper Girl events, has developed fun and strategic "dating" ideas to help moms invest time to deeply interact with their tween girls about friends. Talking with Your Daughter About Best Friends and Mean Girls tackles questions such as
- How can I have and be a friend?
- Just what is real friendship?
- What or who is the source of friendship?
- What do I do when I face a mean girl?
- How should I approach friendship with boys?
Moms (and dads) will be delighted with the biblical grounding and godly guidance that will help them build deeper connections with their daughters and protect them in their friendships.

I loved the "date" ideas in the 8 Great Dates book. They give you some wonderful one-on-one time with your daughter to help her navigate relationships and work on how to be a good friend. One of the best ideas in it is to let her have a sleepover-but remain in the room with the girls the whole time! That way you are able to help all of them talk through their issues and problems. Awesome! I also loved the date idea of doing service for someone in your neighborhood.
Part of each date is to listen on MP3 a little segment by Dannah herself. I'm excited to do these 8 new dates with my daughter.

I saw this book and thought it might be helpful as I try to help my daughter navigate the muddy waters of the pre-teen years. After reading it, I can tell you that Talking With Your Daughter About Best Friends and Mean Girls is a great resource for a mom desiring intentionally guiding her daughter. But the title's a bit misleading in that it's not a resource that focuses on dealing with mean girls, but on relationships in general.
Talking With Your Daughter About Best Friends and Mean Girls actually deals with 8 different relationships over the course of 8 mother-daughter dates. So this isn't a quick-fix book. It's one that requires a commitment to 8 weeks of intentional dates, along with lots of preparation and planning.
The 8 dates focus on:
True Friendship in God's Eyes
Friendship with My Neighbor
Friendship with Mean Girls
Friendship with My BFF
Friendship with My Parents
Friendship with My Siblings
Friendship with God
Friendship with Boyz
Each date includes: prep talk to help moms prepare for the date; a downloadable MP3 talk from Dannah Gresh; Girl Gab to help moms talk with their daughters about the topic; a challenge activity; an MP3 talk with recording artists BarlowGirl; and a driveway prayer. The book even includes ideas on how to include other moms and daughters in a few of the dates.
The dates include lots of fun activities like a slumber party, a shopping spree, committing an act of kindness, and quiet time with God. At the same time make the most of mother-daughter time, helping moms be intentional about their conversations.
Author Dannah Gresh points out that for girls, relationships are critical to their development. She even presents a study in which 67 percent of tween girls (ages 8 to 12) say that having lots of friends is among top 3 things that help them have confidence.
Gresh helps moms realize the importance of their role in helping daughters have healthy, godly relationships. She says, "One of the greatest factors in teaching your daughter about relationships and reducing high-risk teen behaviors like early sexual activity is parent-connectedness."
This isn't a book for the faint-hearted or for anyone looking for quick answers. But for intentional moms who want to make a big difference for the long-haul in their tween girl's life, this is a great conversation guide about relationships.
