    Publisher's Description

The definitive collection of Tolkien’s classic “fairie” tales, in the vein of The Hobbit, illustrated by Oscar winner Alan Lee

Never before published in a single volume, Tolkien’s four novellas (Farmer Giles of Ham, Leaf by Niggle, Smith of Wootton Major, and Roverandom) and one book of poems (The Adventures of Tom Bombadil) are gathered together for the first time, in a fully illustrated volume. This new, definitive collection of works -- which had appeared separately, in various formats, between 1949 and 1998 -- comes with a brand-new foreword and endmatter, and with a series of detailed pencil illustrations by Alan Lee, in the style of his other award-winning Tolkien work, most recently in The Children of Húrin.

The book is the perfect opportunity for fans of Middle-earth to enjoy some of Tolkien’s often overlooked yet most creative storytelling. With dragons and sand sorcerers, sea monsters and hobbits, knights and dwarves, this collection contains all the classic elements for Tolkien buffs of all ages.

    Author Bio

Alan Lee was born in England in 1947. Inspired by Tolkien's work to pursue his chosen path as an artist of the mythic and fantastic, he has illustrated a wide range of books including Faeries, The Mabinogion, Castles, Merlin Dreams, the centenary edition of The Lord of the Rings, and The Hobbit. He is a winner of the Carnegie Medal for his illustrated edition of The Illiad.
J.R.R. TOLKIEN (1892-1973) is the creator of Middle-earth and author of such classic and extraordinary works of fiction as The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion. His books have been translated into more than fifty languages and have sold many millions of copies worldwide.

This is the kind of book you can read to your kids at night. I think my five and seven year old sister and brother would really like this one. Roverandom: this is a cute story of a dog that bites a wizard and gets turned into a toy. He escapes the boy (that got him from the toy store) while on the beach by climbing out of his pocket. He then goes on a quest to be turned into a full sized dog. He goes to the man in the moon for a little, then he ends up in the ocean with the merpeople. The ending is a bit of a surprise ending, though I'll not give it away. Farmer Giles of Ham: This is a good story as well. It starts by Giles driving off a giant (quite by accident. he loads his blunderbuss with nails and shoots the giant in the nose) and being made famouse with the people in his village. Then the Dragon comes. He is expected to drive it off too! In the end he beats the dragon, takes all his gold, and is told that the king is coming to take his portion of the gold. He ends up driving the king off too with a little help. The Advenures of Tom Bombadil: This is really a collection of poems including two about Bombadil and the Oliphant poem. Smith of Wootton Major: There is really not alot that I can write about this one. A boy swallows a magic star and can now go into the land of Faerie. Then after awhile he must pass the star on to another. Don't let the short review turn you off, it is really a nice story that I think younger ones will really enjoy. Leaf by Niggle: This is a story about Niggle, a painter who is not really that good, exept that he can paint individual leaves very well. It is about his painting before he must take a journey, about his jouney and his new life after his jouney. One thing that is not included in the list is Tolkien's essay on fairy stories which I have not read yet.
