Endorsements

"Food writer Juliette D'Alisa adores her temperamental, trilingual family of restaurateurs, but she could do without their bossy skepticism of her online love interest who's so unlike them. Rainy, windy Portland has never felt quite as warm as it does when Juliette navigates long-distance romance, career decisions, and a genealogical mystery. A delectable tale from Hillary Manton Lodge, A Table by the Window includes recipes that are like a warm welcome to the D'Alisa family table." - MEG MOSELEY, author of Gone South and When Sparrows Fall

"Warm, witty, and a culinary delight! Hillary Manton Lodge's crisp writing reminds me of a vintage romantic comedy but with contemporary appeal as the story unfolds with perfect pacing and recipes to make you drool. More than once I found myself wishing I had a pastry chef in my own kitchen. Wonderfully romantic in all the best ways!" - CARLA STEWART, award-winning author of Chasing Lilacs and Sweet Dreams

"Not since Under the Tuscan Sun have I read a book that I both tasted and felt to such an enchanting degree. Author Hillary Manton Lodge has woven a captivating tale of one woman's quest to discover not only herself, but the truths behind an old-world family legacy. With a touch of whimsy, the perfect helping of romance, and a hearty sprinkle of laugh-out-loud humor, A Table by the Window is a delight." - JOANNE BISCHOF, award-winning author of the Cadence of Grace series

"An endearing, smart, must-read novel! A Table by the Window is a delicious tale that had me slowing down so I could savor it longer. Major props to Hillary Manton Lodge for not only taking me on a beautiful journey alongside Juliette, but for making a non-foodie like myself want to take up a new hobby." - KATIE GANSHERT, award-winning author of Wildflowers from Winter and Wishing on Willows

"Hillary Manton Lodge combines a perfect voice, endearing characters, and delectable recipes into a heart-winning story. A Table by the Window hooked me from the first page to the very last word. Bravo, Hillary!" - LESLIE GOULD, best-selling and Christy Award-winning author

Juliette DAlisa is a food writer for the local newspaper. Her entire life has been steeped in food, cooking, restaurants and recipes. Her parents own a restaurant and are of Italian and French cultures. Her brother now wants Juliettes help in opening a restaurant. While going through her French grandmothers things after her death, Juliette finds an old photograph, which leads her to begin asking questions. What potential secrets will she uncover?

She enters the world of online dating as well and meets Neil, an immunologist living in Tennessee. The dialogue between the two was engaging and entertaining. As the story progresses, Juliette thinks she must make a choice between her career and her heart. Will the past help her in her decision?

Im not sure why this book has been marketed as a Christian book because there was very little reference to God, faith or anyones growing relationship with Him. Divorce is mentioned almost in an off-hand or casual manner, which I dont agree with. The book had a slow start, and I didnt like the main focus being on the food, cooking and restaurants. Im not interested in cooking, and some of the recipes given are far beyond my capabilities. This made it difficult for me to connect with Juliette. I was hoping the main emphasis would be on the mysterious photograph, providing readers with more of a mystery than a cooking lesson. I love a good mystery! I dont travel in the society depicted so I couldnt relate to that aspect. I did actually enjoy the use of the French language as I was able to read that and for me that was one thing I enjoyed. I also liked the budding romance between Juliette and Neil. This is the first book in a trilogy, but I probably wont read the other books due to the emphasis on cooking and lack of faith-driven themes.

This was a book that intrigued me from the start because of the cover. I absolutely love the black and white cover with the red letters. It set it apart from every book on my shelf just by that alone.

I had to watch when I read this book because it could be dangerous late at night. Thanks to the recipes and all the talk of food, I would start thinking about either cooking the recipe or eating something similar to what was being talked about! I can't wait to try out all of the recipes mentioned, though.

There are times when words from other languages distract me in books and I have a hard time getting past that. However, that wasn't the case with this book. There were French words used, but the flow remained. I never felt like it was out of place or distracting. In fact, I think it added more to the character of the story.

After the summer I've had, I could understand Juliette. Things are piling up on her and trying to emotionally and physically handle each issue is hard. (Like I said, this was me!) It was a bit overwhelming to think about if she had to write it out! Then throw a long-distance romance in there and that's the cherry on the top of this whole story.

I am very much looking forward to what's next by Hillary Manton Lodge. I'm sure it will be just as beautifully done as this book was.

A Table by the Window was an interesting story! I really admired Jules! I enjoyed her spunk and even uncertainty, but most of all her descriptions of food! Her column that she wrote for the newspaper as well as other food-related articles was mouth watering and delightful!

The highlight of the novel for me was by far the romance! I loved it! Neil is such a great guy and his patience with Jules is so sweet! I am eagerly looking forward to reading more of their romance!

However it was hard for me to keep an interest throughout the entire novel! I felt like I only really got into the story when family secrets were discovered and the romance grew! I thought it fascinating what Jules learned/learning and the time she puts into finding those secrets out! Other times I felt the story fell a little flat, but the food quotes and recipes definitely helped me keep turning pages!

Overall I did enjoy A Table by the Window! It wasn't exactly what I expected and definitely caught me off guard in the parts that wrapped me into the storyline! When book 2 comes out I will be looking forward to getting my hands on it!

I give this novel a 3.5/4 out of 5 stars!

A delight to a foodie's heart and soul. A sweet sigh for the romantic reader. A depth of writing for the admirer of good women's fiction. This book has a taste of it all to make it a worthwhile read.

I am a foodie. Yes, I am. However, in being a foodie, I'm more of a snob about where my milk and chicken comes from. Juliette, however, is a foodie on a whole other level and even for the mac&cheese reader, I do believe they will be salivating by the time they've finished book. And maybe tempted to try a recipe or two.

Juliette is one of those characters I would love to sit down with over tea and cookies and get to know her. She had depths I don't feel were fully reached in this book—which is actually a good thing in this case since there is a #2 coming soon. The romance is simple and sweet, yet complex.

Something hard to pull off without leaving the reader unsatisfied. I honestly wasn't sure if I was going to like the ending. I loved it. It was perfect, while leaving me hungry for more. Like a good meal should.

I thought it was well balanced between characterization and action, though at times it did feel as though the plot plodded a bit. But those moments were few and the book overall a quick read.

An easy four stars with an eagerness for the second release, hopefully in the near future. I'll be looking forward to returning to Juliette's kitchen.

This review is my honest opinion. Thanks to the publisher for my copy to review.

A Table by the Window by Hillary Manton Lodge was a fun read. It is filled with many recipes as the story of food writer Juliette is told. The story opens up with Juliette receiving a special table her grandmother willed to her. Juliette is the youngest in her family who are all involved in food from owning food business, chefs, etc.

After a relationship gone bad, Juliette tries on line dating. She "meets" someone after she thought she had deleted her account to the online dating service.

This story was so well written, it was hard to put down. The ending is such a surprise because it is like it stopped mid sentence. Now I need to find the second book to the series. Ü

I highly recommend this book and received this e-book free from Water Brook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review.
