DiAnn Mills tells a fast-paced story of forgiveness and family, truth and healing, as she explores the dangerous lives of those who are Sworn to Protect. As a female Border Patrol agent in Texas, Danika Morales manages life-and-death situations well, but when an unknown cross-border enemy threatens her young daughter, her family, and herself, she suspects a link to her husband’s unsolved murder two years earlier. The criminals seem to have a mole within the Border Patrol, so she gets help from Dr. Alex Price, an intriguing and compassionate new acquaintance from the medical clinic. Together, they scramble to find her husband’s murderer and to stop the enemy from harming more innocent people.

Mills depicts the high-stress jobs of Border Patrol agents and emergency room surgeons well, providing action and intensity from the beginning of the book. She handles the topic of illegal immigration with depth, insight, and compassion. Short, quick-paced chapters invite the reader to keep going. A quote introduces each chapter, many of which highlight the importance of telling the truth. John 8:32 starts one chapter with the reminder that “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (NIV). Other themes include forgiveness over anger, compassion mixed with justice, and self-sacrificing love.

At the opening of the novel, Danika does not fully trust God because of her husband’s murder two years before. Still, she does her job well, mixing courageous action and compassion in pursuing safety at the border. When her life is threatened, she must choose to return to God and to continue searching for the truth. Those close to Danika feel pressure as well, including her brother-in-law and his family, her new love interest, and other close friends. The histories between the characters add depth to the relationships within the novel. However, some characters feel underdeveloped and their motives are not completely fleshed out. One well-developed relationship involves a subplot between Danika and her daughter’s nanny, who hides a secret despite feeling like a member of Danika’s family.

This is a fast-paced novel of relationships under stress. It is a good story for anyone who likes a romance-suspense plot, particularly Christian women. The story includes some tense scenes, but is still suitable for teenagers. For those who like themes, the quotes at the beginning of each chapter add dimension to what is already an interesting story, while those who skip over them will still enjoy all of the romance and action. – Kristina Charles, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
