The second coming of the Man of Steel.
Overview
Movie screens these days are crowded with Spider-Men, Batmen, X-Men, Hulks, Fantastic multiples of Four, and so on. Who needs another? Well, maybe the world does. And, besides, this isn t just another superhero. It s Superman the prototype of all superheroes, whose greatest superpower may be his longevity.
What has propelled Superman s popularity for 70 years? Superman Returns s director, Bryan Singer, in a Newsweek interview, said, There s a very strong Christian allegory particularly in our film, which is about saviors and sacrifice. I was very conscious of that. But [Siegel and Shuster] were born of immigrants; Superman is very much the ultimate immigrant. That s what I think it s really all about being an outsider ( A Flying Leap, by Sean Smith, July 10, 2006). This study guide will help you discuss these themes of saviors, sacrifice, and solitude that make Superman Returns more than just another superhero film.
