This book takes us to a time when women's hardships differed from those of today, but were equally as difficult, often even perilous. Each of the ten chapters tells the story of a different woman in history and how she uses her faith. The first one, "Royal Crisis," which is set in the 1500's, relates an event in the life of Queen Kateryn, wife of Henryh VIII of England. When the chapter opens, Kateryn's maid shows her a letter saying that the king has ordered her death. The suspense builds from that moment until Kateryn's best friend, Duchess of Suffolk, comes to help. Through discussion and prayer Kateryn and the duchess come up with a plan to get Kateryn back in the King's good graces. Ms. Simmons does an excellent job showing this 1500's setting and creating tension while incorporating Kateryn's faith.

Cynthia carries you back in time to meet nine fascinating women. She drops you right into life-changing events that occured in their lives like Kateryn, queen of England, who got arrested by her own husband, Henry VIII, for speaking to him about her faith in Christ and Katie Luther who ran a boarding house on her own (when women did not take care of businesses)after the death her famous husband, Martin Luther. My personal favorite was learning about the engagement of Charles H. Spurgeon to Susannah. If you are looking for a good read, pick up Struggles and Triumphs. You will be encouraged to trust God for help and guidance through your own challenges, like wise women have been doing for centuries. Her questions for thought and discussion are great for Sunday school or a book club, too.
