The Story of the U.S.A is a series of workbooks which present basic topics in American history in language that's easy to read without sacrificing interest or scholarship. Written for the upper elementary and secondary levels, these illustrated books offer intelligently written and carefully structured material which develops vocabulary and comprehension skills as well as informs.

Book 1, Explorers and Settlers, covers Native American civilizations through the American Revolution. Each chapter opens with a vocabulary section of 5 to 10 words with pronunciations; passages are followed by multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, and true/false questions with a writing and discussion element at the end of the chapter. There is a review test after chapter 7 and a final cumulative test. Grades 4-8.

Good source of information, but wasn't pleased to pull my son out of public school based on wordly teachings only to begin our first day of homeschool where this book (chapter one) began with evolution as fact ("Scientists have proven this artifact was over 20,000 years old").

You even have to answer true or false in the quiz at the end of the book as to if they have proven how many thousands of years something is.

I fully plan on teaching my son the differences between creationism and evolution so he is armed with both facts, but not on the first day of school and in such a manner.

The worbook has 14 lessons and a test after lesson 7 and 14. The first ~2 pages of the lesson are a prep with vocabulary words and captioned pictures. We divided the lessons into two days, taking the voca words and coloring the pics while reading captions. Then the next day reading the material and doing the Q&A sections. The Q&A follows the major themes, asks the information a few different ways, and asks some thoughtful questions. The length of each lesson is not overwhelming. My 4th grader enjoyed learning history from this book (meaning he didn't groan, protest, or sigh), but more importantly it got him interested in history. As we just completed the book, I do not know how well over time the lesson information will be retained, but hopefully the interest in history will remain.

I bought this series in the hopes of finding material that my reluctant 4th Grade reader could pursue on his own - a nudge from the mama-bird, so to speak. It not only met our needs, but has proven an engaging and well-planned history review. He thoroughly enjoys the work and is reading with more confidence. I would say it is appropriate for any 3rd - 5th Grader, with a reading level falling between these.

I was so amazed at this book! There wasn't much information on it so I hesitated to purchase...It is WONDERFUL... the lessons are inclusive, not so lengthy that my third grader becomes bored, but enough information that I feel she is getting the whole picture. Breaking this into a 4 day weeks is easy. I can supplement the workbook with readers on each subject. It promised to be our favorite class this year!
