In ever increasing numbers, they are announcing their calls to the gospel ministry and making haste to establish themselves in viable ministries throughout the country. Their presence in all levels of ordained Christian service-including preaching and pastorial ministries- promises to reshape our understanding of traditional clergy leadership roles, tile us even more toward a neo-Pentecostal fervor in the way we have church, and provide us with new and creative ways of addressing problems within the community. In this remarkable book, thirteen African American women tell the heroic and heartbreaking stories of their calls and journeys to the ministry. While some of these women are well established in their ministerial services, others are only beginning. Collectively they represent a voice that needs to be heard in churches and seminaries across the country.

African American women continue to confess their call to ministry even when they know such a confession may cause them to face criticism and even ostracism from many of the same men and women who nurtured them in the faith. In This Is My Story, thirteen successful African American women clergy tell the powerful, inspirational, and sometimes heartbreaking stories of their calls and ministerial journeys, which they experienced in the midst of anguish, uncertainty, and in many cases unfriendly leadership environments. Each of the women includes a sermon of particular importance to her.
