Many of the statistics you read about teenagers and faith can be alarming. Recent studies show that 40-50 percent of kids who are connected to a youth group throughout their senior year will fail to stick with their faith in college. As youth workers are pouring their time and energy into the students in their ministries, they are often left wondering if theyve done enough to equip their students to carry their faith into adulthood. Fuller Youth Institute has done extensive research in the area of youth ministry and teenage development. In Sticky Faith, the team at FYI presents youth workers with both a theological/philosophical framework and practical programming ideas that develop long-term faith in teenagers. Each chapter presents a summary of FYIs quantitative and qualitative research, along with the implications of this research, including program ideas suggested and tested by youth ministries nationwide. This resource will give youth pastors what they need to help foster a faith that sticks with all the teenagers in their group long after theyve left the youth room.
Dr. Kara E. Powell is an educator, professor, youth minister, author, and speaker. She is the Executive director of the Fuller Youth Institute and a faculty member at Fuller Theological Seminary (see www.fulleryouthinstitute.org). Kara also serves as an Advisor to Youth Specialties and currently volunteers in student ministries at Lake Avenue church in Pasadena, CA. She is the author of many books including Sticky Faith: Everyday Ideas to Build Lasting Faith in Your Kids (with Chap Clark) and Deep Justice Journeys. Kara lives in Pasadena with her husband, Dave, and their children, Nathan, Krista, and Jessica.
Brad M. Griffin is the associate director of the Fuller Youth Institute, where he develops research-based training for youth workers and has co-authored Sticky Faith: Youth Worker Edition and Deep Justice Journeys. A native Kentuckian, Brad now lives in Pasadena with his wife, Missy, and their three children. After more than fifteen years in youth ministry, he now volunteers at his church.
juliea5 Stars Out Of 5if you work with teens, this book is a must-have!October 9, 2011julieaQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Need "practical ideas to nurture long-term faith in teenagers" in your ministry? Or maybe in your own teens? Sticky Faith - Youth Worker Edition is THE book!
Based on a 6-year longitudinal study of over 500 youth group teens as they transitioned to college, Sticky Faith presents a perfect blend of research, teen responses, real life ministry experiences, and practical suggestions.
The research results offer invaluable insight into the minds and hearts of teens as they transition their faith from high school youth groups to college campuses, and beyond. This information alone inspired me toward new youth programming ideas, thus the research findings could almost be a stand-alone book. What an added bonus to be offered scores of tips and programs ideas from churches in a cohort group that have already reprogrammed their youth ministries according to the research. Excerpts from teen survey responses were the icing on the cake, making this not just an important, but also enjoyable read.
I grabbed this book in every free moment I could find, and finished it in just a few days. I cannot wait until others in our church ministry have read Sticky Faith so we can work toward a more lasting faith in the teens in our community. I expect to hear great things from churches who make Sticky Faith a part of their youth ministries!
I received this book free from Zondervan for the purpose of providing my honest review. I was not required to give a positive review.
