Located in: Carlsbad, CA Submitted: December 08, 2007 Tell us a little about yourself. I am a Christian parent of twins boys, born at 24 weeks (15 oz.) I co-founded Steps4Kids, LLC in 2005 in order to help those helping children. Prior to Steps4Kids, I worked as an attorney for over 15 years in both public service as a prosecuting attorney and chief clerk for the PA Supreme Court, and in private practice for a large general practice law firm. Once I had boys, I realized the great need for educational support in the home and at school to enable all children to succeed (see motivation). I served on the executive board for the North Coastal Consortium for Special Education (oversaw 14 school districts), the board for Philadelphia City Sail and currently serve on our school distict's Futuring Committee (strategic planning committee for children with special needs). I contribute regularly to Valerieslist(a national email support group for parents and educators of children with Autism). Prior to my legal career, I worked in public relations for Cooper & Associates where we handled PR for feature films, actors and corporate accounts. What was your motivation behind this project? One of my children has cerebral palsy which in turn connected me with the special needs community. Because of my legal background, I began volunteering for families to help them advocate for their children educational and therapeutic needs. Learning of their children's struggles and having personal knowledge of my son's struggles within the public school systems, I decided wanted to create a company that produced products to empower parents who homeschooled their children and empower teachers who supported our children at school. I developed a handwriting prototype to see if visual modeling would help typically developing children (especially boys who often have handwriting difficulites) and children with special needs (e.g. ADHD, cerebral palsy, Autism) learn handwriting more quickly. (Many behavior journals discuss how studies show that children who use visual modeling learn more quickly and retain more). So, I tried the prototype on my sons (one with special needs, one typical). The Handwriting prototype worked beautifully. My son without special needs was given a certificate by his teacher in 2nd grade for "immaculate handwriting". My son who has special needs started writing on lined paper and drawing on his own, something he had never done before. Seeing their successes, I teamed up with a respected San Diego occupational therapist who then helped me take the DVD to the next step and we released this product commercially in July of 2007. What do you hope folks will gain from this project? I hope that use of this DVD will speed up a child's handwriting learning process, educate adults about common writing problems and the easy ways to correct them, and excite children about drawing using their letters so that they can be creative and communicative with their thoughts and emotions. I also hope that my instructional DVD can support parents and teachers by giving them a little free time while their child practices with the DVD. How were you personally impacted by working on this project? Hearing the success stories of parents, educators and the children they support replenishes me daily and motivates me to help others who in turn help others as well. 1 Peter 4:10 Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? The Bible, Ghandi "Be the Change you Want to See in this World" Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: Just appreciate their time to take a look at the Steps4Kids DVD sales page. We donate much of our time and our DVDs to families in crisis and purchases help us with those efforts. Find Related Products |
