    Re: Preacherman

I was in Sem. and had Preaching under all three autors. H. C. Brown did most of the structure and research. The STANDARD Preaching in those days was by Blackwood. It was "old" and had a very rigid structure. It provided little opportunity to be yourself or have your own style. Also, Billy Graham and "The Hour of Decision" were new on the scene and every young preacher tried to be another "Billy Graham" and copied his style.

Dr. Brown wanted to do something that would help a preacher to be creative as well as be himself and sevelop his own style. He studied the masters andtheir method of developing their sermons. He also interviewed notable contemoorary preachers.

His research concluded that the Masters, rather than following the rigid Blackwood, focused on three areas: Exegesis, Illustration, and Application. Those became the focus of the three authors in developing and writing the text.

I began with Blackwood and struggled. When the book became available I audited the course to learn the process, I loved it and it opened up a new excitement in preaching.

I still use it for young beginning prechers. It is easy for them to use and to develop their pulpit style.

Exceeded all I expected. The price was very good considering a college type textbook.

I found this book shallow in it approach. It seems to be written from a neo-evangelical perspective. This book contain very little that would be pplicablle in sermon building. Very disappointing book.

By far, this is the best book on sermon preparation that I have ever read. It is concise but complete.

One of the author was a professor of mine when I was in seminary at SWBTS in Fort Worth. Dr. Northcutt in his preaching class used the original text as a textbook for the class. I have just started this revised edition, but it looks and reads just I remember it in class. It is excellent. Thanks for asking. Good book.
