Tell us a little about yourself. I am Lucile Hooton Lynch, co-founder of Steps4Kids, LLC and principal creator of the Steps4Kids to Draw DVDs. I am the proud parent of twin boys and have been married to their dad and my best friend for over 20 years. I helped co-found Steps4Kids to bring video modeling educational products to homes and schools so that positive educational support could be available in both settings.
What was your motivation behind this project? I have volunteered for years to teach art at our local elementary school. Through the process, I worked directly with the children and frequently heard children talk about how they are not very good at drawing. Often I'd hear these comments before the children even attempted a project. My sons similarly felt they were poor artists. So, I thought if I could create something that helps children draw a few things well, then they'd feel more successful about their skills and start to explore art more. Art is an important tool to help children develop spacial and visual motor skills, problem solving capabilities, and creative skills. Home educators and educators at school seemed to need something to help children connect with art. Many of the programs available are designed for more advanced or older artists. I wanted to provide something that helped beginning artists regardless of age.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? My hope is that the drawing DVD will help budding artists have a "toolbox" of skills that will help them draw items commonly used in projects at home and school. I've seen from some of the children used in our test run that once they master the drawing shown, they use their imagination to create new and better versions! Our hope is that the drawing DVD sparks the artist's imagination by helping the artist be successful.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? Whenever we do a DVD, we provide samples to bloggers with children to see if they like the project. This one has received the most positive input of all of our DVDs and helped children with and without disabilities learn to draw. Seeing the "before" and "after" drawings from the parents, some of whom have children with disabilities, really moved me. I am very thankful to have the ability to help children do something better. In this instance, the DVD helps them draw better.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? My largest influence personally is 1 Peter 4:10. Other than that, it is my loving family and supportive friends.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: When using this drawing DVD, feel free to pause it to allow the viewer to take his or her time. Use fun colors and post the art so that the child can see their work. Don't expect perfection as art is an unperfect gift. Enjoy!
