Rachs RamblingsBangor, MEAge: 35-44Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Touching Historical ReadSeptember 28, 2015Rachs RamblingsBangor, MEAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4Stealing Jake was a touching read for me. Livy O'Brien, who was previously known as Light Fingered Livy, helps run an orphanage. More than that she helps feed the children that live on the streets. Jake Russell is a Sheriff's deputy. A lawmen is the last person Livy wants to have in her life.
I really liked Livy; but in this read, the boy, Luke, did the stealing....of my heart. There are kids today who, due to drugs, help their siblings to survive as well as themselves. He tried to help the children the best way he knew how. A few scenes, especially towards the end ( no spoilers) made me teary eyed. My emotions ran high several times in this read. The author did a great job of making me love the characters, the historical backdrop, and the romantic tension and banter. It really is a great Christian Historical fiction read with action, suspense, high emotions, and romance as well. I'll say it again I LOVED the children in this novel...oh how they tugged at my heart. I hope you will enjoy the read, but I also hope you can't let it go once you put it down!
I received this book through bookfun.org for my honest opinion which I have given.
nkwbookreviewer5 Stars Out Of 5Page-turning Christian historical action mystery romanceSeptember 26, 2015nkwbookreviewerQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Set in the 1870s in Chestnut, IL, outside of Chicago, Stealing Jake is a page turning historical fiction filled with romance, adventure, mystery, secrets, regrets, tragedy, life lessons, and unforgettable characters. This is a Christian, inspirational novel that is thought provoking yet refreshing without being "preachy". Author Pam Hillman tackles the heart grabbing subject of orphanages, street children, working conditions, and abuse in this book. It is not the first book I have read by her and I was not disappointed at all. I loved her other books and this one as well. Her pleasing way with words swiftly drew me into the 19th century and introduced me to my new friend, Livy, who struggled with relatable problems, and Jake, the farmer and deputy who is on a mission to protect the town and keep everyone safe. Livy has a kind heart, regrets and has tried to run from her past. Also, she has changed. Like many of us even though we have changed, there are struggles with shame and forgiveness - if she will be forgiven for what she has done or had to do. Livy has a passion for the street children that is not understood by Jake. He has issues of his own, guilt from his past, too. The author does a good job showing how God forgives us and we should forgive ourselves. Livy and Jake are both headstrong, determined individuals and their relationship is fun to watch develop. The dialog is realistic as they banter. There are a number of supporting characters in the book that will catch your eye, too. It is a well written book that will keep you interested until the end.
I would recommend this to anyone that enjoys Christian fiction, mysteries, or historical fiction. There is a lot to learn about post Civil War Illinois around Chicago. I rated this a 5 out of 5 stars. I was given a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion by The Book Club Network.
SusanPMichiganAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Action packed!September 24, 2015SusanPMichiganAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5What an entertaining and very enjoyable story! Pam Hillman knows how to capture your attention and keep it with humor, banter, danger and heart-capturing characters woven perfectly into it. A unique story-line about the children of the streets and the sweatshops of the past. Livy has turned her life around and is trying to help those just like her by taking in those kids to her orphanage. Deputy Jake is just trying to keep this coal mining town crime free and a string of robberies is making that awful hard to do! Livy crashes into his path and ends up entwined in the mess that unknown criminals are making of their city.
Both fight the attraction and I think I love their reactions to each other the most. They are wonderful characters who are backed by well-written secondary characters I loved the mini-stories of their lives sprinkled in. The whole cast of this story makes it a deeply moving and fast paced book. I felt like I was watching a movie. I highly recommend for a fantastic read this is a bookshelf keeper!
I received this book from bookfun.org for an honest review.
sstormAge: 25-34Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5You'll love this!September 20, 2015sstormAge: 25-34Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Pam Hillman made each character come alive in Stealing Jake. With each page, I couldn't figure out what to anticipate next, not because this was thriller, but because this book was a page turner that kept me going and had me thinking about the characters when I wasn't reading.
Livy O' Brien "just a pickpocket from Chicago" doubts God's provision for food and money. Jake Russell the town sheriff has his fair share of problems, but will do anything to protect Chestnut, Illinois. However, Jake cannot understand Livy's need to protect the children on the street. He knows Livy is putting herself in danger, which intrigues him as he has never met someone quite like her, but why would she put herself in danger at the risk of helping kids? Will Livy end up in jail for all the mistakes she has made or will end up with Jake? Will this book turn out to be a happy ending like we want all books to be?

This is not just your typical romance novel, it is full of so much more. Love, friendship, hardships, mystery, crime and more all intertwined throughout this historical romance.
Livy OBrien has tried to run from her past for the last two years. She is a completely different person now that she has accepted Christ as her savior, yet would people ever get understand her past and truly forgive her too? She has an understanding and love for the street children that Sheriffs deputy Jake Russell can not understand. With her determined personality and loyalty to the street children will she have to give up all that she thought impossible when the truth is revealed?
Sheriffs deputy Jake Russell has never met anyone like Livy. He is doing his best to keep this town safe yet she is determined to travel to places that he feels are unsafe. When he feels she is hiding something will it be the undoing of what has been blooming? Jake must solve the mystery of all the theft in this town before it all blows up around him.
