Publisher's Description

Starting a family is a soul-shaping, world-altering experience. Unfortunately, in a culture of competing values and protracted timelines, couples are increasingly backing their way into parenting or missing it altogether. By the time the average couple tries to have kids, they are often beyond their late twenties and surprised to learn they are sliding past the peak of their fertile years.

In Start Your Family, Steve and Candice Watters encourage couples to be intentional about their timeline in the early years of marriage and to trust God to help them boldly launch their families. Responding to the most common doubts and hurdles, they offer biblical inspiration for the questions: Why have kids? When is the best time to start?  How can we fit kids into our lives?

Editorial Reviews

"This book is astutely wise. It cuts against the grain of weak and fearful thinking. It will startle you and free you to trust God with your family and your future. That’s when you find what real life is all about.  You can never afford to have kids—so why not trust God and get started?"

—Steve and Mary Farrar, authors of Point Man and King Me (Steve), and Reading Your Male (Mary)

"A remarkable, go-against-the-grain book, with wisdom, practical advice, and biblical application bounding from every page. The Watters have written an emotionally aware and intellectually astute book that is as sensitive as it is compelling."
—Gary Thomas, author of Sacred Marriage and Sacred Parenting

"Ably written and offering both practical advice and spiritual encouragement, Start Your Family should be read by every Christian couple entering into marriage or considering whether to start a family or have another child."
—Allan Carlson, president, The Howard Center for Family, Religion, and Society

"Just like ’in the beginning,’ the family today is at the center of a great spiritual battle. Start Your Family will certainly inspire couples to reclaim the blessing of children and, through that, build a true culture of life."
—Christopher West, Fellow, Theology of the Body Institute, and author of The Love That Satisfies and Good News about Sex and Marriage

Though I felt it targeted Generation X, as a Gen Y'er 'Start your Family' opened my eyes to the conditioning I've received from society to think of parenthood as optional and to think that the convenience factor should be the deciding factor as to when you start having children. I also liked the chapter that dealt with reconciling with your parents to give your children the gift of grandparents. Hard to hear but good to do! Although I found some of the arguments compelling I was still left wanting more answers than this book could give. But for sure this is not your mothers How to Start Your Family book! It was an easy read and thought-provoking.

I purchased this book for my son and daughter-in-law who were looking for guidance in making the decision to start their family. They have both remarked about how the author must be "just like them". They are really identifying with the male/female comments respectively and it is helping to solidify their future plans.Thank you for having just the right tool that they were looking for to guide them.

Author/Artist Review

Author: Steve & Candice Watters
Located in: Colorado Springs, Colorado

Tell us a little about yourself.  Steve and Candice Watters founded Boundless.org webzine for Focus on the Family in 1998. Candice served as the Boundless editor for four years until leaving in 2002 to be a freelance writer and editor. Candice is the author of Get Married: What Women Can Do to Help It Happen. Steve Watters is Director of Young Adults for Focus on the Family and author of Real Solutions for Overcoming Internet Addictions. Steve and Candice met at Regent University where they earned their Master¬ís Degrees in Public Policy. They have four children.

What was your motivation behind this project?  It was our experience with delaying babies -- and the mentor couple who challenged our notions of waiting -- that gave us the nudge to write this book. We thought we needed a long lead time to get to know one another after our wedding. But because we married at the average age of 27, we didn't have the luxury of an extended period (5 years or more) of being DINKS. Our mentors' question, "what makes you think you'll still be fertile when you decide to have babies?" was the wake up call we needed to stop pushing snooze on my (Candice's) biological clock. Given the difficulties we had conceiving our third child, it gave us pause that had we not changed our course, we might be childless today.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  We want couples who are on the fence about starting their families to walk away with the vision and preparation to move ahead with having babies. Despite the messages of our culture, children are wealth. There are so many reasons to not have babies. The book and blog by the same name are full of reasons for them.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  Writing this book in the midst of a miracle conception of our own, as well as taking care of the three kids we already have, was a prime opportunity to live what we say. We were reminded afresh just what a blessing it is to be parents, as well as how much we depend on the Lord and His grace to do it well, to His glory.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  Martin Luther, C.S. Lewis, G.K. Chesterton, Leon Kass, Gary Thomas, Kurt Bruner, and Alan Carllson

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  Start Your Family will encourage couples to be intentional about their timeline in the early years of marriage and to trust God to help them boldly launch their families. Responding to the most common doubts and hurdles, Start Your Family offers biblical inspiration for the questions, "Why have kids?," "When is the best time to start?" and "How can we fit kids into our lives?"
