In Start Your Family, Steve and Candice Watters encourage couples to be intentional about their timeline in the early years of marriage and to trust God to help them boldly launch their families. Responding to the most common doubts and hurdles, they offer biblical inspiration for the questions: Why have kids? When is the best time to start? How can we fit kids into our lives?
STEVE and CANDICE WATTERS met at Regent University while earning Master's Degrees in Public Policy. Marrying shortly after graduation, they moved to Colorado to work at Focus on the Family. Steve grew up in Washington, NC and Candice grew up in Toledo, OH and so the West was a great place to help them leave and cleave.Today, the Watterses live in Louisville, KY where Steve serves as vice president for communications at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is also working on his M.A. in family discipleship. Steve and Candice speak, write and feed their blog, www.FamilyMaking.com, as they're able. They spend a lot of our time enjoying, guiding, serving and being stretched by their four children: Harrison, Zoe, Churchill and Teddy. The Watterses founded Boundless.org webzine for Focus in 1998. Candice served as the Boundless editor for four years until leaving in 2002 to be a full-time mom, doing a little freelance writing and editing on the side. Candice is the author of Get Married: What Women Can Do to Help It Happen (Moody, 2008). Together Steve and Candice wrote Start Your Family: Inspiration for Having Babies (Moody, 2009).

I also liked the chapter that dealt with reconciling with your parents to give your children the gift of grandparents. Hard to hear but good to do! Although I found some of the arguments compelling I was still left wanting more answers than this book could give. But for sure this is not your mothers How to Start Your Family book! It was an easy read and thought-provoking.
Maureen Johnson5 Stars Out Of 5March 11, 2009Maureen JohnsonI purchased this book for my son and daughter-in-law who were looking for guidance in making the decision to start their family. They have both remarked about how the author must be "just like them". They are really identifying with the male/female comments respectively and it is helping to solidify their future plans.Thank you for having just the right tool that they were looking for to guide them.

Tell us a little about yourself. Steve and Candice Watters founded Boundless.org webzine for Focus on the Family in 1998. Steve Watters is Director of Young Adults for Focus on the Family and author of Real Solutions for Overcoming Internet Addictions. Steve and Candice met at Regent University where they earned their Masters Degrees in Public Policy. They have four children.
What was your motivation behind this project? It was our experience with delaying babies -- and the mentor couple who challenged our notions of waiting -- that gave us the nudge to write this book. We thought we needed a long lead time to get to know one another after our wedding. But because we married at the average age of 27, we didn't have the luxury of an extended period (5 years or more) of being DINKS. Our mentors' question, "what makes you think you'll still be fertile when you decide to have babies?" was the wake up call we needed to stop pushing snooze on my (Candice's) biological clock. Given the difficulties we had conceiving our third child, it gave us pause that had we not changed our course, we might be childless today.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? We want couples who are on the fence about starting their families to walk away with the vision and preparation to move ahead with having babies. Despite the messages of our culture, children are wealth. There are so many reasons to not have babies. The book and blog by the same name are full of reasons for them.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? Writing this book in the midst of a miracle conception of our own, as well as taking care of the three kids we already have, was a prime opportunity to live what we say. We were reminded afresh just what a blessing it is to be parents, as well as how much we depend on the Lord and His grace to do it well, to His glory.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? Martin Luther, C.S. Lewis, G.K. Chesterton, Leon Kass, Gary Thomas, Kurt Bruner, and Alan Carllson
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: Start Your Family will encourage couples to be intentional about their timeline in the early years of marriage and to trust God to help them boldly launch their families. Responding to the most common doubts and hurdles, Start Your Family offers biblical inspiration for the questions, "Why have kids?," "When is the best time to start?" and "How can we fit kids into our lives?"
