Steven Furtick is the founder and lead pastor of Elevation Church, which has more than 10,000 people in weekly attendance. Elevation is one of the fastest growing Churches in America. Familiar with this church, its teachings and worship, I was truly excited to read and review the Sun Stand Still devotional by Furtick. It's subtitled A 40-Day Experience to Activate Your Faith. Let me just say, the book did not fail to activate my faith! From day one I found so many nuggets to share, I've been tweeting and sharing via texts to my friends quotes from this book like crazy. I couldn't wait to read the next day's devotional because I knew there was going to be a timely message in it for me. Have you read Jesus Calling? This book had the same effect on me as that book did. I'd open it up and sure enough on that day there was a message that I felt was written directly to me! The book gets its title from the Bible story about Joshua in Joshua 10 where he asks God to make the sun stand still just for a day so that he can accomplish all he needs to accomplish. And God did it! This story is used throughout the book to drive home the message that we serve a mighty God, the Creator of the universe, One who can answer our prayers. Even prayers to stop the sun from setting. He can move mountains. This book seriously reminded me that no matter what circumstances I go through, God is always with me. He wants us to pray ridiculous prayers that most people would scoff at because that's how He shows off. Furtick talks about the importance in having audacious faith and asking God to fulfill something huge in our lives because it shows God that we trust Him and that we know He's a BIG God. We don't want to insult Him with weak prayers. We don't want to pray the prayers of a beggar. We want to get down on our knees and pray prayers like juggernauts. (You'll have to read the book to know what he's talking about.) Don't miss out on this little nugget of goodness.

Here are a few quotes that moved me:

"Stop trying to have all the answers before launching out in faith."

"Faith is not a coping mechanism. It's a weapon of mass destruction to win your spiritual war."

"Sometimes God has to let your dream die so his vision for you can come alive."

"You can't claim God's promises if you don't know God's promises. Saturate your mind with the scriptures."

"You can't hope for the best if you're believing in the worst."

"The greatest movement in the history of humanity sprang from the faith of audacious nobodies."

I must admit that I don't typically use a devotional. I have tried and have just never really felt it effective. I must also admit I have never read Sun Stand Still by Steven Furtick published by Multnomah publishers, or any of Stevens writings for that matter.

That being said I was somewhat skeptical with that mix trying another devotional. I received a complementary copy for my review from blogging for books.

My first impression was the quality of this hardbound book with a colorful cover. I remind you that at this point I was still skeptical. Upon opening and over viewing it quickly caught my eye that each day of the 40 days had a theme but more importantly a scripture. Not just some afterthought but at the top of the page for each day is the scripture. as I began to read the first days devotions, I was pleasantly surprised, in fact I really appreciated the personal testimony of how each days vision touched Stevens life. Steven gives a short teaching and application and at the end of each page a prayer focus. If you are ready for a 40 day challenge and willing to give it the attention you would your TV show or favorite coffee delight, you will be a different person at the end. As is true with any book if you commit to going through this and personalize it this devotional is worth its weight. Besides it is only 40 days and takes less than 10 minutes, no one should be so busy they can't spend 10 minutes on personal growth, especially closer to the lord.

    see you at the shelf

This book is a devotional version of the wildly popular book Steven Furtick wrote called Sun Stand Still. It encourages you to have audacious faith and to develop audacious prayers like Joshua who dared to ask God to stop the sun so that Israel could continue their battle and become victorious. God answered that audacious prayer, and Furtick states that God is waiting to answer similarly audacious prayers that are offered with audacious faith today.

This book is written as a 40 day devotional. Each day is a very short, easily digestible chapter with pithy phrases that pack powerful thoughts. I love the fact that the prayer for the first day is to develop audacious faith. After that happens, so much more is possible!

There are some fabulous sound bites in this book that encourage you to press on and do the type of amazing work through you that God has planned. While Furtick tries to develop a big vision within each reader for the work that God has for your life, this does not always mean that you need to make dramatic, life changing moves. Sometimes the ordinary things that we do (mom duties of diaper changes and instilling the right values and faith in your child) can develop something extraordinary for God (the next Joshua).

Here are some of my favorite phrases_.which only cover the first 5 days in the book!

"If the size of the vision for your life isn't intimidating to you, there's a good chance it's insulting to God."

"When you strip the biblical miracles of their spectacular special effects, a common plot point emerges: extraordinary moves of God begin with ordinary acts of obedience."

"All God needs is all you've got."

And I love this definition of the supernatural: " What we call a miracle is really just the right combination of your ordinary ingredients and God's extraordinary expertise. When God's super collides with your natural, sparks will fly."

For those of you looking for a devotional book that is focused on a specific topic and that will not take the entire year to complete, take a look at this book by Steven Furtick. Unlike most devotionals that may offer you a variety of topics, the author hones in on prayer. While the author looks at various aspects of prayer and our prayer lives, he does not deviate from what appears to be his main overall theme - how to go deeper in your prayer life with big, bold prayers. Every day he uses Scripture to establish the point he is making.

The devotional thoughts are thought provoking and will provide opportunities for you to do a self examination of your prayer life. The text is easy to read and not overly complicated due to tangents or competing themes.

My only suggestion to improve the book is to include all of the Scripture references in the book. The author did place one verse from the Scripture he wants you to read as part of that day's study, but he actually references a larger passage each day. While I do have my own Bibles that I can, and did, use to look up the passages and read them, it would have been more convenient to have it all in one location. I recognize that would make the book longer and probably increased the cost, but I think it would have made the book more complete.

I received this book from Waterbrook Multnomah Publishing through their Blogging for Books Program in exchange for a fair and honest review.

This is a nice devotional. At first I kind of got the feeling that Mr. Furtick is suggesting that we need to always be expecting huge miracles in daily life and I thought to myself that just wasn't biblical, was it? I mean, sometimes we are called to a quiet, orderly existence. Not everybody has the same circumstances, right? But as I read on I realized he is calling us to a deeper, purer faith, and to be willing to ask and receive big things from God when the situation is requiring that. Too much "dead faith" these days I think. I'm excited for "the cure for the ordinary" in this 40 day devotional. He has a Bible verse reference for each day, and suggested "retweet"- which I don't like for reasons I'm not sure of; and a prayer focus. This book will help you stir up your faith, and that's worth the read.
