In Springtime of the Spirit, Maureen Lang weaves a tale of love, loss, and long-awaited reunions as many lives come together in the tumultuous aftermath of World War I. Lang makes it easy for the reader to be drawn into the terrifying world of post-Great War Germany through characters who come to life with every word.

Returned from four years of fighting for his homeland, Christophe is heartbroken to find that the very Germany he fought for is now fighting against itself. Almost immediately after his return, he is sent away again in search of the daughter of a family friend. Amid the upheaval in Germany, romance blossoms anew between Christophe and Annaliese, who has had a long-held infatuation with Christophe. One of the many things standing in their way, though, is a man who shares many of Annaliese's beliefs but who is about to betray those beliefs by endorsing communism. Though at first Annaliese battled temptation for the man, now she must battle between continuing to follow him and holding firmly to the beliefs they used to share.

One verse that seems to recur rather often in the novel is Micah 6:8. "And what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God." Although Annaliese is a strong woman who is fighting desperately for the voice of women and working-class citizens, she still has much to learn about what she believes in terms of both God and fairness. She must decide whether she wants to return to the God she abandoned at the same time she abandoned her family, or if she should hold to the political beliefs she has recently been sharing with the crowds.

Springtime of the Spirit is rich with politics, war, secrets, faith, and love. Any woman with an affection for historical romances and an interest in Germany or the Great War would enjoy this finely-woven tale. – Christa Mullen, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
