Tell us a little about yourself. I've been in newspapers and magazines around 25 years, with an emphasis in sports writing. My stories have been recognized in various state and national editorial excellence contests. I also have written freelance stories for the Chicago Tribune, the Daily Herald, Basketball Digest (nationally published), SLAM Magazine (a nationally published basketball magazine), Preview Sports Magazine (nationally published) and the Chicago Bear Report.
What was your motivation behind this project? I have been a freelance writer for Sports Spectrum magazine ever since the early 1990s (the magazine can be found in most Christian bookstores across the country). The way in which stories in the magazine go outside the lines, so to speak, to address life and spiritual issues has appealed to me ever since Ive been involved with it. A few years ago, the thought came to mind, There have been so many good stories in Sports Spectrum over the years, why not take several of them and turn it into a book?
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? Unfortunately, weve heard so much about certain people in sports doing the wrong thing in recent years, which takes away from the vast majority who are trying to be good citizens. My desire was to highlight those in the field of athletics who are doing the right thing, such as helping the less fortunate, rising to the occasion in the face of tragedy and hardship, and setting a good example for others to follow through their Christian faith. The athletes youll read about in this book are both Christ followers and role models.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? Last year, I had a book signing at a Christian book store in the Chicago area. A friend of mine came in and purchased a copy. He told me that he was going to give it to his father as a Christmas gift. If I remember correctly, he mentioned his father was either and atheist or an agnostic. Him telling me about his father really struck me. It's humbling to learn this book might play a part in helping my friends's father change his mind about God and Christ, with the hope that he'll accept Him into his life.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? Jerry Jenkins, the co-author of the best-selling "Left Behind" series, comes to mind. I interviewed Jerry for a newspaper story over 20 years ago when he lived in the Chicago area, and re-established contact with him last year. He has been a great encouragement; that means a lot coming from an author of his stature. Another source of inspiration is the way in which Joel Osteen presents the Gospel message in a positive, uplifting way. I have purchased both of his books.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: This book, which features stories by several Sports Spectrum writers many of whom have either written for newspapers, other magazines or have authored books themselves gives readers insight into athletes lives that goes beyond what they do on the field or in an arena. Many of the stories investigate how these sports figures, through their faith, faced challenges and adversity in their lives that transcend sports such as divorce, death, paralysis, demotion, poverty, inferiority, retirement, anger, eating disorders or life-threatening illnesses, among other issues.
