No one likes to learn--and be forced to memorize--things that they feel have no application or purpose. A Reason for Spelling removes the stumbling block of "useless" work with their richly integrated spelling workbook. Filled with contemporary theme verses, writing activities and scripture verses, this course also integrates spelling with phonics, writing, and other language arts skills.
This Level A student worktext begins with a phonics section that offer fun activities based on partner letters and sound; for children learning phonics using this book, this section is completed in six weeks at the rate of 1 page per day. If students have or are using a different phonics program, this section may be used for review.
Each of the included 29 units contains four weekly lessons, each with a set of 7 words plus 3 challenge words. Level A words include: bed, red, did, small, glad, all, when, then, cent, mother, for, are, black, many, seven, and others. Arranged in a test-study-test sequence, students will learn through immediate correction of their work.
The student worktext is filled with a variety of fun games that will help students master each week's spelling list. They will edit sentences by fitting words into "shape boxes" that mirror the letters of the word, completing activities that cater to different learning styles, completing "fill-in-the-blank" questions, playing games, taking tests & dictation, and more.
The teacher's guidebook contains reduced-size student pages with the correct answers overlaid; the margins are filled with teaching notes, including a Scripture verse, literature connection with discussion questions, pre-test with instructions marked with the "say" symbol for easy lesson time, additional exercises, auditory/tactile/visual options, dictation sentences, post-tests, and other cross-curricular activities and exercises. A placement test, as well as a reproducible progress chart and scoring rubric, are also provided. 391 pages, softcover.
Level A is designed for grade 1.
This kit includes: one teacher's guide (391 pages, softcover) and one student workbook (254 pages, softcover. Worktext is consumable and not reproducible.

My kids hated spelling until I discovered this wonderful program. This is now their favorite subject! It's fun, colorful, engaging, hands on, and keeps the children interested. When my kids enjoy something, they learn better! These books also include scripture and a meaningful stories at the beginning of each lesson which is great. I plan on using all the different levels for all my four children as we continue our homeschool journey!
DaisyVacaville, CAAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5This product does so much more than teach spellingSeptember 7, 2011DaisyVacaville, CAAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I taught 4th grade for 7 years and used A Reason for Spelling every year. I read the opening story for the lesson to my students on Monday's while they worked on the first part of the lesson. Then we would take a pretest. The rest of the lesson was completed during the next few days. I love that the lessons reviewed the skills I was teaching my students in Language Arts and that we could remind each other of the lessons we learned in the story we heard at the beginning of the week. Those stories are often similar to the lives of my students, and they are learning tools for life.
The curriculum is easy to teach, and the students learn the words relitively easy with the different skill building pages to go along with them.
