SherralAge: 35-44Gender: female2 Stars Out Of 5Not for usOctober 27, 2013SherralAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 2I thought this program sounded perfect for our situation, but it didn't take long for our 4th grade struggling speller to become frustrated. There are too many rules clumped together in the spelling lists. For example: long a list includes a/c/e, ai, ay, eigh, etc. Disappointed. :(

You must read the quick start to make sure you get started right. At first it can seems overwhelming, but it is worth the time to figure it out and get started. I really like the structure of the daily lessons with extra activities to do. My son is a hands on student so the reinforcement activities really help him to learn. Also the idea of not having to test on words you already know is a very big plus.

All the spelling words my kids need to learn are in this book and its a bit tricky to get started, but once you get through the first week or two, PIECE OF CAKE! Excellent!
headzookeeperRed Lion, PAAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Fantastic!!February 27, 2012headzookeeperRed Lion, PAAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I wish I had purchased this program sooner!! I can't believe that the seemingly "high" price tag held me back for so long. Considering that I would regularly spend $50 a year just on spelling workbooks for my four kids, I could have bought Spelling Power once years ago and been done with spelling workbooks forever.
I began using SP with my four kids last year, and now it's the only spelling program that I will ever use again. The introduction that teaches you how to use the program IS a bit daunting, but DO take 15-30 minutes to read through it so you'll really understand the program. The rest is a breeze!
Spelling is now my kids' favorite part of our school day. They are all naturally good spellers (because they are avid readers), but I know that this program has helped them learn and retain "tricky" words and words that they hadn't seen before. Highly recommended!!

This one seems to fit us best. My fourth grader is weak in spelling but is feeling much more confident now and enjoying spelling. Since she isn't given a list to memorize first and gets to skip words that she already knows it seems to make her feel like she knows more than she thought she did! My tenth grader is working on his weak areas in spelling as well. It's working well for him too. I like this because it's all in the same book! No more spelling programs to purchase for us! Yay! It may not work for everyone but it is for us...
Q: Do the lists/lessons concentrate on one phonetic group at a time or are there many phonics sounds and rules mixed in one daily list/lesson? I find mixing the phonetic groups and rules confusing at younger grades and hope they are seperate in daily lists.
Each lesson group focuses on a single spelling rule.
Q: Do the reinforcement activities just reinforce memorization of the words or also reinforce the spelling rules and phonetic s?
This book has spelling based activities that help kids memorize the words.
Q: Won't work on a Mac??? I was firmly convinced I should buy Spelling Power -it sounded perfect for my girls. However, I just saw that the CDROM is not compatible with my Mac. (!!!!!) I am quite bummed about this! Is the curriculum worth buying if I can't use the dvd?
Yes, you can still use this curriculum if you have a Mac computer. The CD-ROM that comes with your Spelling Power has three main sections. 1) Reproducible Forms 2) Searchable Word List, and 3) Spelling Power Digital Tutor.
1) The publisher will provide you with a convenient source for all of the Reproducible Forms section that comes on the CD-ROM. You will have to save the forms (once only) to your computer and then you have them for future use.
2) There is an alternate version of the Searchable word list for people with Macs. You can get this at the same time as you load your reproducible forms and masters.
3) The Digital Tutor does not work on a Mac and unfortunately never will. The Digital Tutor is not a major or integral part of the Spelling Power program. It does not replace the daily face-to-face testing that you do with your student(s). It is simply another drill activity that a student can do doing the 5-minute Discovery Activity section of the spelling day.
