This is the type of insight Melanie Shankle offers in this quirky memoir of motherhood.
Written in the familiar, stream-of-consciousness style of her blog, Big Mama, Sparkly Green Earrings is a heartwarming and hilarious look at motherhood from someone who is still trying to figure it all out. Filled with personal storiesfrom the decision to become a mother to the heartbreak of miscarriage and ultimately, to the joy of raising a baby and living to tell about itSparkly Green Earrings will make you feel like youre sitting across the table from your best friend. A must-read for anyone whos ever had a child or even thought about it.
I love Melanie Shankle. She is a beautiful conglomeration of so
many things I appreciate, and each of them is obvious in these
pages. She's profoundly insightful, witty, relatable, wide open, and
passionate about Jesus. She likes people, and I like that in a person.
In this book, Melanie lives her life with us and invites us to live our
lives with her. Relish this ride, sister! You won't be sorry you took it.
--Beth Moore, New York Times bestselling author and Bible study teacher
What happens when you read a book that's one part Blue Like Jazz,
one part Anita Renfroe, and two parts Big Mama? You laugh too loud, nod till your neck hurts, and throw your hands up with a relieved yes! Simply put: I love Melanie Shankle, and every page of this book shimmers with her fabulous voice, honest hilarity, and the light of a Savior that makes even the wackiest, hardest days of motherhood somehow glimmer with something grand. Sparkly Green Earrings - the perfect accessory to be dazzled by grace and more than a glint of God.
--Ann Voskamp, New York Times bestselling author of the One Thousand Gifts
Melanie has the rare gift of making you embarrass yourself laughing
while considering the deeper undertones of each story. I don't
know a mama who would say that parenting is exactly what she
thought it would be all the time. It's a delicate dance we do, this
balancing of the ordinary and the holy, and often we get it wrong.
The ability to pull the humanity out and examine it in the wake
of what really matters is not an easy task, but it's one Melanie has
done exquisitely. As writers, we pray our words string together in a
way that connects our flesh to the Storyteller, and I'm so honored
to have my endorsement on a book that does that as well as this
one does. I dare you to read it without laughing, without seeing
your own life embedded in its corners. You're in for a journey with
a beautiful woman who, in my estimation, has a lot more light
catching to do around a million more turns. Her wit, humility, and
true writing ability will make you want to chase her as she goes.
--Angie Smith, Author of I Will Carry You and What Women Fear
In her memoir, Melanie uses an irresistible combination of dab the-corner-of-your-eye emotion and laugh-so-loud-you-scare-the-cat humor. Every chapter of Sparkly Green Earrings - actually, every page - is a splendid journey through sudden, side-splitting laughter and utterly relatable tears...and back to laughter again. She captures every fear, crazy notion, nervous breakdown, and
desperate moment of new motherhood so expertly and hilariously that I actually wondered if she'd tapped into my memory of having my first child. And all throughout the book, as Caroline grows and starts school (and has a very short stint in Brownies), Melanie establishes just how much her faith has guided and propelled her through this miraculous privilege known as motherhood. Her
memoir is nothing short of a delight.
--Ree Drummond, New York Times bestselling author of The Pioneer Woman Cooks
Melanies writing is insightful, hilarious, and full of encouragement for the journey. Sparkly Green Earrings is refreshment for the soul. For all the reasons thousands of people love her blog, you will be smitten with her book. Mostly because you will fall in love with Melanie through its pages, and more important, with the God she serves.
--Kelly Minter, Bible study author, writer, and speaker
Meet the Author
Melanie Shankle was in fourth grade when her teacher asked her to read a story she had written to the entire class. Even though that story now seems a little silly and simplistic, it made the students in Mrs. Rice's homeroom laugh out loud, and a little dream began in Melanie's heart - a dream to use words to make people laugh. more

This is a book I'd buy for every mom-to-be, new mom, and experienced mom from this time forward. It's a joyful journey into motherhood. There were many times I had to read entire chapters to my husband because he wanted to know what was making me laugh so hard! Jessica BatesAge: 25-34Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Fun easy read for Moms in the midst of chaosAugust 30, 2013Jessica BatesAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4Sparkly Green Earrings is a wonderful memoir by Melanie Shankle, author of the Big Mama blog and a regular contributor to ThePioneerWoman.com. She is fun and witty as she recounts her experiences with getting pregnant and having her first child. She talks about the infant years, preschool, expectations of other parents, and how becoming a mom changed her. She has a wonderful sense of humor and is candid and honest about her journey as a mom.
Chapter titles include "I Wanted My Epidural in the First Trimester", "That Time I Didn't Sleep for Four Years" and "Potty Training:Bringing People to Their Knees Since Forever". She recalls incidents where she went crazy and to great expense creating a shoebox float for a yearly celebration for her daughter's preschool and it ended up being paled in comparison to other parents crazy creations. This is a great, fun, easy read that will have you laughing right along with her. I really enjoyed how honest she was and how much I could relate to her stories. As a mom, I really liked this book.

It was a light, easy, fun read that had me laughing pretty much the whole way through. The book was very relatable. I loved this book and will be recommending it to others.
i blog 4 books5 Stars Out Of 5A Charming MemoirAugust 3, 2013i blog 4 booksI'm not a mother, and I don't know if or when I ever will be. However, Sparkly Green Earrings still resonated with me. Yes, it's a book about "motherhood," but it's so much more than that. It's really about relationships and friendships and trusting God when we don't know why things happen like they do. It's about growing up and growing out of our selfish tendencies so that we become more like Christ each and every day.
Melanie has a special gift for writing about her personal life experiences in a way that still strikes a chord with readers. I found my eyes misting over as she talked about her miscarriage, and then mere paragraphs later (not even the next chapter!) I was guffawing loudly enough for Hubs to roll over and ask what was wrong. (I have GOT to stop reading in bed after my husband has already fallen asleep!!!)
This is an incredibly charming book, one I am happy to recommend! [5 stars]

Melanie Shankle pokes fun at everything from using eight pregnancy tests to verify her pregnancy to a year later going to the dentist hoping she'd have a cavity so she could get some sleep while he was filling her tooth. When Caroline was two, Melanie sat on a swing with a little dried bird poop on it. When Caroline wanted to switch swings and she saw the swing Melanie had been on, she said in her loudest voice, "Mama! Did you poop in your swing?" And then there was the Thanksgiving Caroline had the stomach flu and managed to cover Melanie not once but about a dozen times. As you laugh through each situation and there were numerous, Melanie pointed to Jesus, the one who loves us unconditionally and doesn't make mistakes. It truly is a fun book to read.
