Publisher's Description

This is a short series of expository messages on the prayer of the

Lord Jesus Christ recorded in John 17. Michael Milton has

written in a way that will be encouraging and uplifting to any

Christian. Maybe you have heard missionaries and the pastor and

church officers prayed for by name, along with those who are

sick or in special difficulties. Like most Christians, you don't

really qualify for any of these categories, and perhaps you have

wondered, 'who prays for me?' These messages give a surprising

and thrilling answer in an easily read book that you will want to

return to again and again.

    Michael Milton's quick-read devotional is a much needed refresher for any modern-day Christian. He focuses in on Jesus' prayer in John 17, and walks alongside the reader to show the deep compassion and love Jesus Christ has for us. Milton goes on to combat Post-Modernism and Modernism alike to show the power and significance of Truth on our lives. He uses John 17 as a springboard in his later chapters to address the myths about Christian submission, facts of the Christian faith, zealous humility, and the importance of trust.

    Sounding the Depths is a dual-threat: For it not only teaches seemingly incomprehensible doctrines smoothly, it also helps the reader grow emotionally in their walk with Jesus. Milton himself serves as a great example for a passionate reader of God's Word, as he is bubbling over with enthusiasm for Jesus' prayer in John 17. His joyful and encouraging tone is ever-present on every page and in every chapter.

    The only critique of the book I have is Milton's organization of thought. Sometimes he'll transition from one thought to another, other times he won't. Sometimes he'll warrant a quote to support his earlier claim, sometimes he won't. This can make the experience a little more confusing for the reader, but it's not bad enough to be a "turn-off." Milton uses many good quotes from distinguished theologians, such as D.A. Carson and Martin Luther, so most of the time the quote doesn't necessarily need explaining.

    Even though I tend to enjoy more scholarly works, reading Milton's book was a great experience for me. His questions and prayers at the end of each chapter were thought-provoking and reflective, and they provide a great way to respond to the ideas presented. I recommend this book for casual readers and for small group discussions.
