There were certain things I enjoyed about this book and other things that I didn't like as much. I loved the era the whole idea of the American soldiers set in occupied Germany following the war. I also liked how the soldiers received entertainment from some pretty talented singers as a core part of the plot with the creepy Wagner music theme and Hitler's obsession with Wagner's music as a backdrop. That was fun and interesting. Then the story hit a slow spot and I lost interest. When I picked it up again and started to get back into the story I enjoyed the rest. However, there was something that didn't set right with me. I think maybe it was that I didn't feel fully immersed in the setting and wasn't fully invested in the story itself. The relationship between Betty and Frank seemed a bit artificial to me and their one argument was almost plastic, so I wasn't feeling the tension. That's the best way I can describe my perception. However, overall it was a good story. Not typical Goyer WWII fiction, though, which I've always found enthralling. Maybe that was one of the things that didn't work for me. Regardless, if you enjoy a historical mystery where someone is bent on destruction and there are some amateur sleuths trying to save the day, you should enjoy this story.

Tricia Goyer's extensive research into the World War II era, including many firsthand accounts from WWII vets, shows in every book she's written about this time. Songbird Under a German Moon is no exception. Betty, Frank, and all the other characters in this book are real, fun, and I got to the end of the book feeling as though I'd made a slew of new friends. Of course, the intrigue and mystery always capture my attention, and that did not disappoint in this latest story from this author. A truly enjoyable read.

Songbird Under a German Moon by Tricia Goyer is a fast-paced historical mystery set in Germany in the days after World War II. Betty Lake arrives in Bayreuth, Germany to perform in a USO tour. She's thrilled to be singing in such a prestigious theater, one that was designed by Wagner, but her excitement quickly turns to fear when her roommate mysteriously dies, and Betty is certain that the label of suicide is wrong. Army photographer and undercover spy, Frank Witt not only believes her, but is falling under the spell of her beautiful looks and song. The couple must put aside their own fears and work together to discover the truth before someone else dies. While not up to the standard of Goyer's other work, this is still a great read. The look behind the scenes at the USO as well as the political climate in post-war Germany is compelling. The mystery itself is a bit obvious and the machinery for it creaks in spots. That said, I wouldn't mind at all if Betty and Frank decided to team up again and continue solving mysteries while serving in the military.

I've read several of Tricia's books and have enjoyed them all. Songbird Under A German Moon was no exception.Anxious to feel as if she's done her part for the war effort, Betty signs up for the USO and is shipped overseas to sing for the soldiers.Combat photographer Frank Witt is also sent to post-war Germany, on an unknown assignment.Betty feels out of place among trained and talented musicians, and Frank doesn't understand the importance of pictures of the singers or the Festspielhaus. When Betty's roommate goes missing, everyone realizes that despite the war's end, safety is not guaranteed.Although I had my suspicions of the "bad guy," his true story still surprised me when he was revealed. I was also surprised to learn how much Wagner's music played into some of Hitler's strong beliefs. I thought the musical aspect gave an interesting angle to this WWII era book.Songbird Under A German Moon was an enjoyable read. Tricia maintained a good balance with history and love and mystery.If you're a fan of Tricia's books, you'll likely enjoy Songbird Under A German Moon.
