It is the fascinating account of Mosab Hassan Yousefs life growing up as a Palestinian in Ramallah on the West Bank. Yousefs father, Sheikh Hassan Yousef, is a humble, dedicated Muslim cleric whom Mosab admires above all others, but he is also one of the founders of Hamas. During imprisonment and torture by the Israelis and after seeing Hamas torture its own, Mosab agrees to spy for Israels secret police, Shin Bet. Shortly after this, he begins to attend a Bible study. The words of Jesus delve deep into his heart: You have heard that it was said, Love your neighbor and hate your enemy, but I tell you: love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be the sons of your Father in heaven (Matthew 5:43-45). Though not yet a Christian, those words change his life in his dangerous role as both a spy for Israel and the protector of his father.
The story grabs you, especially the suspense of Mosab trying to stay alive, to remain under cover, and to protect his father, who was a likely target for assassination by the Israelis. His growing admiration of Jesus and disaffection with Islam provide emotional conflict in this hard-to-put-down book. Mosab shares insight and analysis of the Middle East crisis and shows the political intrigue and cowardice of many of the terrorist leaders.
One of the most challenging moments for me in the book was when Mosab recognized the difference in the Christians he was meeting. This is not the religious Christianity I see in Ramallah. This is real. The Christians I had known before had been no different from traditional Muslims. They claimed a religion, but they didnt live it (p. 123). Ouch. I have thought about that in relation to my own testimony since reading it.
Son of Hamas is fast paced but thoughtful. It inspires and packs an emotional punch. Though I found it one of the best books Ive read in some time, it will probably appeal to more men than women. The authors include helps in the back, such as a glossary, a list of the major figures, a timeline, and endnotes. The book is available on audio CDs also. This book is highly recommended. Debbie W. Yousef, the son of one of the founding leaders of Hamas, reveals his personal knowledge and experiences as part of the organization responsible for countless terror attacks. He also discloses his life as a double agent and how God used it to show him that the Israelis were not his enemies. Yousef goes on to share his own Damascus Road experience of coming to love and follow the Jesus of the Biblebecause of Jesus teachings on loving your enemies and those who persecute you.
For American readers living after the 9/11 attacks, this book sheds light on the mindset behind such attacks, and yet shares hope that God can change hearts and lives just as He did Yousefs.
The book certainly revealed my lack of knowledge concerning the geography and history of what we often call the Holy LandIsrael and Palestine and the surrounding countries. For that reason I sometimes found the events hard to follow. At the same time, I learned so much, because I began to get a picture of the worldview from which so many approach lifea worldview so opposed to my own.
All in all, I came away with a new love, a new compassion, for those whom many would consider to be enemies. More than ever, I hope and pray that many more will come to know and follow Jesus as Yousef has. Knowing that his father has disowned him only gives me more respect for Yousef since he is from a culture in which honor and family are highly valued. Yet, he was willing to give up all to follow Jesus. It has challenged me to consider my own faith. What am I willing to do, to give up for Jesus? Does Jesus mean all to me?

This young man risked all, including family ties and his own life, to know the true & living God. Also puts modern day Israel in a good light. You will not be disappointed by this book.

To read how the Lord moved, in his complicated and dangerous life, to lead him to Him was thrilling to read. He was granted Political Asylum in the U.S. (God bless America!) and, as far as I know, is still residing there in relative safety (there are many who wish to see him dead). I pray this man's story would reach many, and that many hearts would be changed.

Very well written, gripping and real. This book did a good job in shining a light on the spiderweb of issues the world of Islam and consequently, the entire world, are facing. A must read for every American to help to understand this world, our position in it and our responsibility to the defense of Israel.
