I have suffered for 2 years with a son who is mentally ill and this book is a reminder to all loved ones to stop and take time to pray.

This book When Someone You Love Suffers from DEPRESSION or MENTAL ILLNESS, is the first I have read of a series, by Cecil Murphey. When you are faced with desperate situations you are often looking for advice to help your loved one in an instant. An impossible dream. You have no time to plough through complicated technical books and you are shouting HELP! This book answers that cry. It shares gives glimpses into the reality of others lives as they struggled with real situations, real stresses. It is set out in short diary like snapshots that focus on an aspect of the problem, and give a way of working through it, that worked for the person. The page ends with a short prayer to God highlighting the lesson worked. Every situation is different; each snapshot is seen through different eyes a husband about a wife, a mother or father about a child. This approach would give reassurance, support and encouragement to different carers caught up in the often frightening world of mental illness. As if someone took your hand and I said, I understand, I have been there. The sections are short and you could read them quickly and take them in even in those states when your mind is in panic mode. This is a book that could be used or given to anyone in the situation, whether or not they have a belief in God, as the writing is like thoughts on a day, and the end short italicised prayer is not in any way obtrusive. but shows how the love of Jesus acts on lives. When someone we know has illness in the family we WANT to do something to help. I would recommend buying this book to show you care.

This book goes to places in the heart where other books have not dared to go. The short but packed readings shed light on the real feelings and often unstated questions of those of us who love and care for someone who struggles with depression or mental illness. I dont have to be afraid of my questions or feelings or my own need for support and encouragement. I can face the uncertainties of depression in my loved one with hope. And with God. This is a book that will be a resource Ill keep close at hand and one which I will recommend and give as a gift many times over.

Reading Cecil Murphys book, When Someone You Love Suffers from Depression or Mental Illness, may be the first step a care giver takes into a support group. The daily readings bring encouragement and sage advice from others who have walked the road alongside mentally ill loved ones. Each reading offers hope without being frivolous. These stories depict the lives of others who carry similar burdens and share the strength found in adversity. This book gives comfort to both those new to the care taking role and the seasoned veterans. A list of support groups and resources is included for those ready to move ahead.
