The sadness and the tenderness of life are felt so acutely in the presence of beauty, and love is revealed more in our sorrow than in our joy. Solomon, from Solomons Song
The wisest of all kings, beloved son of King David and his wife Bathsheba, builder of a prosperous empire, lover to many wives and concubinesKing Solomon was once merely a son of David with no guarantee of ever taking the throne. On the cusp of adulthood, with no direction in life, Solomon found himself infatuated . . . in love with a lowly shepherdess, a young maiden chosen for his father to serve David in his later years.
Overhead clouds ceased to discharge life-giving rain, and the anxious people looked to King David for relief from the famine. In their weakness they turned from Yahweh and sacrificed to foreign gods. But David's eldest son, Adonijah had a plan, one that could cost the Benjamites their lives. Revenge.
Solomon was still Bathshebas eldest sons and with it came certain family expectations. His mother wanted nothing less than the throne for her eldest living son. He must marry a princess first, and then he can marry any common woman he desired.
Solomon struggled against family expectations and his chief rival, his own brother, Adonijah; he fought against the most disappointing aspect of his quest to become ruler, "Love is nothing, when pitted against strength and power."
Based upon Solomon's Song of Songs, this tells the story of David's favorite son Solomon and his love, Shulamit, along with the semi-tragic misunderstandings and political machinations that kept them apart. That part's fictional - we don't know anything about her other than her name, family and where she came from - but there's plenty of historical detail as well as information from the Bible, from direct quotes from the Song to explanations of how the many names of God amplify our understanding and experience of Him, and some good wisdom imparted from Shulamit's mother, Ramat. Rated 4 out of 5 stars.

Fifth book of the authors Old Testament Biblical series, this three hundred and two page historical fiction targets readers who love romance, the Songs of Solomon, and sibling rivalry. With the slang version of an illegitimate child used and stories of war, adultery, and immorality, it would best be read by mature adults.
With Biblical scholars noting the Abishag of First Kings could be the lover mentioned in Songs of Solomon, Kerr writes a believable love story that comes to life between royalty and common folk.

Mrs. CMissourlAge: 45-54Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5A Page TurnerMarch 26, 2014Mrs. CMissourlAge: 45-54Gender: FemaleRoberta Kells Dorr is a master author of Biblical historical novels. I close each book having learned more about the Jewish culture of that day and interest to seek additional knowledge of the characters she includes in her writings.
I was fascinated by the cunning of Bathsheba, Solomon's mother, who desired her son to become the greatest king on earth. When she discovers that her son is falling in love with a common Shulamite shepherdess maiden, she arranges for her husband, King David, to bring her into the palace to warm the king in his old age. This does not quench Solomon's love , but actually causes his heart to yearn for her more. In the end, not hate nor greed but love wins!
Where Scripture is very silent, this author writes about the culture of this time. The love Solomon had for this woman is the love that every marriage should possess. It is the love that every woman yearns for and is blessed if she finds. This book was beautifully written, yet intense, as I felt the internal struggle Solomon faces when his mother manipulates his life. I felt his joy as he, at last, experiences life with the woman his heart longed for.
I encourage you to purchase a copy to curl up with for a couple evenings or for a weekend treat. Solomon's Song is published by Moody Publishers, a company you can trust for clean romance novels.
