One of the best political suspense novels I've read in a long time!
August 7, 2014
With the every increasing rise in terror threats, America is waiting for a president who can stand up and take action. It seems that Martin Sterling is just the man for the job. With government cuts in military spending, presidential candidate Martin Sterling believes we are becoming too passive and headed in the wrong direction. We shouldn't be negotiating with terrorists, we should be firming up and securing our borders and increasing the spending and support for our military. He is just what the American people are looking for, and if he can convince more of them, he might just win the next presidential election.
For Jack Crittendon, the economy is his worst enemy. Struggling to find a full time job while his his Pamela is forced to head back to work while 8-months pregnant is making him feel the pressures of maintaining leadership in his home. Yet no matter where he applies, he always comes up empty. But thanks to a contact with his friend Derrick Williams at the Gazette, if presidential candidate Martin Sterling wins this election, they will need someone to take over the editor's desk and they are looking at Jack. Unfortunately that won't happen until November and that is a really maybe at best. Until then, he is working security part-time at the Festival Arena in preparation for Sterling's upcoming speech.
Just when he thinks life can't get any more interesting, the Festival Arena is notified of a potential terrorist threat that about 30% confirmed to take place the night of Sterling's speech. But not all threats turn into reality, still they aren't willing to take any chances and call in for reinforcements from the local police and S.W.A.T. teams as well as anyone they can convince to help out. Thank goodness Jack's long time friend, Brian Shakespeare, an ex-military service man and survivalist is part of their team and they know he can handle organizing the security detail should anything happen. They just aren't prepared to see this nightmare come true in the worst of circumstances and things are about to get personal in this political suspense thriller.
I received Sky Zone by Creston Mapes compliments of Christian Fiction Blog Alliance and David C. Cook Publishers for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions contained in this review are strictly my own. For those of you that love fast-paced, action-packed, political suspense novels, trust me and pick this one up. While it is part of a series, The Crittendon Files, you can pick this one up a stand alone and get immediately hooked. I literally read this one in one sitting. The stakes are high for both Jack and Brian when despite all their training, they find themselves coming up short and the expected results are not what they get. I love the way Creston gets the reader involved and caring about the outcome of his characters like Jack and the situation that is going on in both his personal and professional life at the same time which amps up his stress level. The writing is geared to hook you at the begin and leave you completely breathless by the end. Out of all three books in the series I loved this one the best. It's great for those of you that love movies like Patriot Games and The Fugitive. You'll find yourself holding your breath during this one! Easy to give this one a 5 out of 5 stars and love adding this one to my series. There is also discussion questions included at the conclusion of this novel!
Before I read the novel Fear has a Name, which is the first of the Crittendon Files series from Creston Mapes, he was an unknown author to me. After reading Fear Has a Name followed by Poison Town all I wanted to know was when his next novel was coming out! Sky Zone is seriously just out of this world and has the main character, Jack Crittendon, along with his family finding themselves in the midst of financial troubles. Not only is Jack looking for a new job in journalism, but in the interim he is working a minimum wage job while his pregnant wife Pam is working full-time. Jack has been searching for new employment while his mother-in-law, who has the beginnings of dementia, is living with them. Then a normal night at work all of a sudden is anything but normal. At the Columbus Festival Arena Jack normally helps people find their seats and helps with security. The evening event of a Presidential hopeful, Senator Martin Sterling, giving a speech followed by a rock star who has become a Christian has turned out to be so much more than expected.
A terrorist threat that turns real, as well as Jacks 8-month pregnant wife surprising him by coming to the event along with their other two girls heightens the tension for Jack in an instant. Readers will become engrossed not just with the element of danger, mystery and intrigue but also the personal life of the Crittendon family. Along with high suspense and action, the audience will meet a host of unique characters which reflect the many people we might meet in our everyday lives. I liked how the author has a hard core Marine come to a point of making many decisions because of how Jack has lived his faith before the man constantly. Not that Jack or his family are shown as perfect. They are not by a long shot, but like real people along with all the baggage people in life carry. Plus I loved how the characters with faith in God who have seen Him work at times struggled to believe Him for finances or a new job is such a reflection on reality.
I cannot recommend highly enough all three books of the Crittendon files be read so that the audience can appreciate the adventures of this family. What will come next from the pen of this author? Whatever it will be I hope it is a story that follows reporter Jack Crittendon into another exploit with all the suspense, thrill and faith aspect of the others!
Jack and Pamela Crittendon are back with even more problems in their personal lives. I enjoyed seeing where they have progressed to since the end of book two in this series. This is nicely interspersed throughout the suspense of the main story and very easy to relate to.
The main story is introduced at the end of chapter one with the announcement, Weve got a national security threat. It races full speed ahead from that point on. This book is filled with action and adrenaline pumping terror. The story builds to a heart pounding crescendo. Then it finally eases off a little when I reached the point that I felt like I couldnt take anymore. There is a nice lull as the personal problems are worked through, only to come back with a final burst of action to wrap things up.
Are Jack, Pamela, and their friends going to live through this one? If they all survive will they be able to find their way, with Gods help, through the quagmire of problems in their personal lives and with their families?
This is the best book by Creston Mapes that I have read. He brought back a number of familiar characters from the previous books in this series. He has also developed a number of new people and described them so well that I was able to relate to them and the challenges they faced.
Nearly everyone has a happy ending. The journey to get there was very well crafted and an absolute pleasure to go on with these characters.
I received a free copy of this book through The Book Club Network in exchange for my honest opinion.
Sky Zone is a fantastic ride! The story is fast paced and thrilling. Creston Mapes writes an intense tale of dynamic proportions.
Life is a struggle for Pam and Jack. Jack is working part-time and the financial strains are beyond stressful as he watches his wife, eight months pregnant, work full-time to try and support their family. Pam struggles to balance full-time work, a mother who is fighting dementia and raising two kids while very pregnant. Both Pam and Jack know the situation has got to get better soon so they are trying to survive the in between time trusting God will make a way.
Brian Shakespeare is a delightful character. A former marine, Brian is a survivalist to the extreme, prepared for anything, or so he thinks. His marine training and skills are tested to the hilt in an unexpected twist of events. But survival isn't going to be worth much if his marriage falls apart because of his neglect as a husband.
While supporting presidential candidate, Martin Sterling's political rally, Jack and Brian find themselves in the middle of a terrorist attack. When members of the arena's security team go missing, it's only the beginning of a wild night's ride with SWAT, military and terrorists.
This story has nail biting suspense to the very last page. It is the first of Mr. Mapes' books that I've had the privilege of reading and reviewing but it's definitely not the last. Although this is the third book in the Crittendon Files and I had not read the first two books, I was able to jump into the story without any problem.
I am extremely grateful to the Book Club Network and David C. Cook publishing for the opportunity to read this book and offer my opinion in exchange.
Creston Mapes is a very talented author. Although this wasn't my favorite book by him, it was very good. This book is part of the Crittendon Files. It is Book #3. Even though this is part of a series, it can be read before separately. This book follows Jack and Pam Crittendon's life. Jack has lost his job as a reporter, therefore, he is working a part-time job and also being "Mr. Mom". Pam is 8 months pregnant and dealing with the issues of that and also working full-time. Jack is working the Festival Arena with his friend. Martin Sterling, who is a presidential candidate is at the Festival Arena doing a rally. There are reports that there is a potential terrorist attack. Jack and his friend are working throughout the book to try and keep everyone safe and stop the terrorist. This book was high energy throughout. I would recommend this book to everyone who enjoys action and adventure. I received this book from bookfun for my honest opinion.
