Develops Writen and Oral Communication Skills
Skills for Rhetoric rigorously develops written and oral communication skills. It is very methodical and organized; each chapter building on previous ones.
Every chapter begins with a summary on what is covered. For example, in lesson 20 the following is covered:
Writing Skill: Fact, inference, and Opinion;
Grammar (Writing and Speaking): Usage- Pronoun and Subject/Verb Agreement;
Public Speaking Skill: Converting the Fact, Inference, and Opinion Essay to a Speech;
Looking Ahead to the Next Week: The Historical Profile.
This curriculum is very focused and with laser-like precision develops skills that will be invaluable in college and the work place. There is also a lot of variety in regard to the speaking and writing assignments. Examples include descriptive, persuasive, explanatory, comparison/contrast essays along with general analysis and synthesis essays. A full eleven chapters are dedicated to writing research papers.
Public speaking skills include how to convert written papers into speeches, presentation aids, dramatic readings, poetry readings, debates, impromptu and didactic speeches along with overcoming fear, and enunciation & effective listening skills.
Goals/Objectives, strategies on how to meet them, and, as a teacher, how to evaluate assignments are listed in each chapter within the teacher edition. The student edition is a must and is not necessarily consumable (so it can be used for other students). The student edition gives a lot of explanation and examples.
This is a straight-forward, unique curriculum that I highly recommend. I'm using it for my 8th grader and plan to use the next set in this series (on literary skills) after we are done.
