Alfred Edersheim (1825-89) was a Vienna-born biblical scholar who converted from Judaism to Christianity. Needless to say he is quite the "expert" on the subject of Jewish life in Bible times. This book is an excellent resource of information with much detail. The index and appendix are great also and make for finding topics of interest easier and quick. I especially enjoyed chapter eleven and twelve's discussion of Jewish views on trade professions and commerce and chapter thirteen's information on the religious activities of the Pharisees. The book is a little wordy and a bit hard to follow at times but is nonetheless an excellent resource for study and also beautifully portrays the heart of the Christian faith as Jesus and the apostles taught it. The only reason I didn't give this book five "stars" is because it was a bit dry at times and its wordiness made the read a bit less enjoyable and sometimes a little hard to understand (I found myself having to re-read pages or paragraphs a few times to get the point). All in all, very good though (not to mention very affordable) and worth adding to the Bible student's bookshelf.
