Singapore math is an excellent program. The concrete>pictorial>abstract approach is very effective in teaching thinking skills and developing a true understanding a mathmatical concepts. My brother-in-law who was a math teacher for fourteen years recommended this program. My children are enjoying learning math more and are understanding it better than they did with the traditional method we used before.

This is the only math we've ever done at our house and it is WONDERFUL; Kids get great test scores AND understand all the math concepts. I love that there is constant review of past materials; its easy for them, because they get to work with the concepts with manipulatives BEFORE the discussion Textbook... which of course comes BEFORE their Workbook... So by the time they get to their student workbook, It is super easy for them. What a great progression to teach a new concept: the new concept is introduced with Manipulatives that is guided by the teacher... then the concept is taken further with colorful Pictures and discussion in the Textbook... then finally the kid is on his own in the Workbook. Thank you Singapore!

I have done Teaching Textbooks, but I found that it had holes that I later had to go back and cover myself with my son. He liked it though because it was a easy program to kinda skip through and watch the computer which made it easy to get the answers but not so easy for retention...easy to 'cheat' the program. This did not work for us. I have tried several programs and curriculum over the past 4 years and was told about Singapore. It really finally made math click for my struggling math son. He likes how it gives a few different ways to solve the problems so he can find a way that 'clicks' for him. Math is finally working for him and we are breezing though it. The small books help him not to feel overwhelemed, but it is a bother as a parent to keep ordering books! I do wish they would do a year at a time, though it did work well for us being that he was half a year behind to only order the second semester of the curriculum. It does get a bit costly when we are ordering a homeguide with each semester as the guide is 2x the cost of the workbooks. The only complaint I have that keeps this from being 5 stars is that they do not do any repeats during the semester. It seems some curriculum have you doing a crazy amount of review every lesson, but not having any is not good either....can't we find a happy medium? This has worked great for him that sense we pulled him from PS, we had a LOT of missed levels to cover and this is a good way to do it. I have not tried the practice book yet, so maybe that is where they review.
