Singapore Math's
Primary Math, U.S. Edition series features the Concrete> Pictorial> Abstract approach. Students begin by learning through concrete and pictorial means before moving into abstract thought and development, which encourages an active thinking process, communication of mathematical ideas and problem solving. Lessons are designed for a mix of teacher instruction and independent work, and students are encouraged to discuss ideas and explore additional problem-solving methods.
Primary Math, Book 1A teaches students numbers 0-10, addition, subtraction, naming number positions, counting, common shapes, comparing and measuring length and weight.
This set of textbooks and workbooks is designed specifically for U.S. students. Names, terms in examples, measurement, spellings, currency and other such elements have been changed to reflect American names and stylistic preferences. 88 pgs, non-consumable and non-reproducible. Paperback.
Asian students have consistently scored higher than American students on international math testing. Why? Their teachers use a method that introduces concepts in a different order than U.S. schools. Singapore Math, I found that the goal of the course is to guide your student to become a problem-solver, even in unfamiliar territory, and understand the why behind each newly mastered concept.
Singapore Math has created a homeschool version for American students. The easy-to-follow Home Instructor’s Guide introduces new concepts (from the Textbook) and provides activities for necessary reinforcement, using simple manipulatives and games. The Textbook is a springboard for meaningful discussion between teacher and student. This discussion is basic to the course. (This is a true parent-directed curriculum. It does not rely on a pile of work sheets or hours spent in front of a monitor with a “bells and whistles”-laden computer program.) Once a concept is grasped, the student can move on to the exercises in the Workbook. These workbooks offer children a sense of accomplishment before moving to the next level: “Wow, look at the problems you mastered!” Everything is explained in a step-by-step manner with a no-rush go-at-your-own pace approach, but a weekly “suggested” schedule with objectives is offered.
Singapore Math offers a free online placement test. Since the course is so reasonably priced, you can try it without a hefty financial commitment to see if it works with your learner.

This is our first year of homeschooling and we decided to try Singapore Math 1A. My 7-yr-old daughter really like the lessons and the colorful textbook. We purchased the 1A workbook along with the Home Instructor's guide. She finds the workbook fun with such a variety of activities it never becomes boring. The instructor's guide is full of ideas. Although I find it a bit lengthy I am able to pick and choose what works best for her. We will be purchasing the 1B textbook, workbook, and instructor's guide.

Excellent math book. My son loves it. We had tried others but this one is bright, colorful and easy to understand.

My 6 year old son was struggling with math. I bought a popular curriculum and we had nothing but frustration.My son would see a page of math facts and freeze up. A friend recommended Singapore and I switched mid year. My son loves this curriculum. He is excited about math again and understands their approach to teaching math. I have really enjoyed teaching/learning it too and highly recommend Singapore.
