Comprehensive and excellent presentation to ensure student understands concepts. However, for my purposes, I felt the teachers book was overpriced. My child is older, has splintered skills and I'm reteaching him math in order to cover all the pieces missed in the school curriculum. I have since purchased only the workbooks for the next grade level. The teachers book does contain a schedule to follow, remedial and gifted students schedule and work, and great suggestions on supplemental work to help with comprehension and functional use. If the teachers workbook was less expensive I would purchase it for next levels. My son is doing great with this math program and moving along quite rapidly. I find the material covered at the second grade level equates out to a third grade level for standardized testing.

I am a trained classroom teacher that is now electing to homeschool our kiddos. I have seen many math programs, and this, by FAR is one of the best. The Singapore Approach to learning has been heralded by homeschoolers for years, but the main complaint is that the philosphy can be difficult to understand and teach. Not so with MIF! This program makes math come alive and is user friendly for adults and kids alike. It is hands on, provides adequate independent and guided practice, and makes learning some pretty complicated mathematical concepts fun. My 2nd grader loves the games and we play them again and again. We use the Student Book and lay a clear page protector over the pages so that she can write in the book with dry erase markers without damaging the pages. My only complaint with the Student Book is that they do not allow adequate space for student writing and calculations. I purchased the teachers guide and assessments and was disappointed. Not only were they completely unnecessary, but super PRICEY! At the early stages if you have the Student Book and Student Workbook, you are all set for a years worth of math.

This is my second year teaching MIF. Last year I taught my 4&6 year olds from the first grade book. Because it was so hands on it went very well, but I lost my four year old at double digits (naturally). So this summer I am using the first grade book with him again. I love the way the math is taught (Singapore approach) and the materials are all very high quality. I only hesitate because it is a "full" load of math. Last year I took the time to do everything per TM, but this year I will be more relaxed and pace the lessons based more on our needs. It is a great program, very well done. Perfect for someone who wants to be told "what do I do?", but I am transitioning to the point where I would rather not have to buy the TM and just use the text with workbook. Again, I love the method, I think it builds a very solid understanding of abstract concepts and we enjoy it, but it is a lot of books to buy (this set is one semester).

By the way, Singapore math is top rated, but it is not just for the "gifted". I thought at first it was like advanced math, but I have found it really takes the time to teach a subject, first with manipulatives, then pictorial, then abstract. So I think it works at all levels AND supplemental workbooks are available for re-teaching or accelerated learning.

I would like to see them adapted more to homeschooling needs.
