This sequel to Just As I Am, takes up with the main character, Mayla, still struggling with issues. Like the first book, this one made me LAUGH out loud! I love the way Virgina Smith tells a story. What a terrific read.

Seamlessthats the writing of Virginia Smith. This author has the ability to move me along line-on-line and chapter-by-chapter before I even think to come up for air. How long have I been reading? I ask myself. Actually, I dont care; I simply picked up the thread of Maylas unconventional approach to life and dive. Smith weaves Mayla in and out of a job loss, a Florida trip to patch up a relationship, and an online tete-a-tete. Can unconventional meet conventional and survive with faith intact? With her typical candor and strength, Mayla doesnt disappoint. And neither does Virginia Smith in Sincerely, Mayla.

Sincerely Mayla is Virginia Smiths follow up to Just As I Am, where we first met Mayla Strong a young and very unconventional character and watched her come to faith. Sincerely Mayla brings us this lovable character as endearing as she was in book one, though a bit tamed in her appearance, sporting fewer piercings and less colorful hair. In the thick of winter, Mayla finds herself unemployed, on the outs with Pastor Paul who Mayla discovers she has feelings for, and the proud owner of a pet that she finds in the middle of a storm. When faced with these disasters does Mayla do what every unemployed, lovesick, pet owning woman should do? No, of course, not. This is Mayla were talking about here. She sets off for Orlando, not to visit the big mouse, but to reconnect with her grandmother and get away from her problems. But poor, Mayla. Her problems hop on the plane or zip through emails and the telephone to make her vacation anything but restful. As an avowed suspense and mystery lover, I rarely make time for novels outside of this genre. Virginia Smiths books are one of the few exceptions. Smith does such a wonderful job of character development. She provides the reader with a unique cast doing battle with everyday issues and marries this with the struggle to live within their faith. Wrap all of this up with humor and a fun plot and you have one must read after another. Sincerely Mayla certainly fits this mold and is another Smith winner. Through Maylas innocence we see the world from a different perspective. We watch her struggle with her new faith and think about how we live out our own faith. Her innocence coupled with the basic desire to do the right thing makes Mayla a very lovable character. She faces the same life issues we all face and the reader can deeply empathize with Mayla, forming a strong bond with her. Dont miss Sincerely Mayla or any other Virginia Smith novel. Buy one today, you wont be disappointed.

Ive always said if the Lord had intended His people to live in snow He would have put the garden of Eden in the middle of the North Pole. So begins Sincerely, Mayla. With these opening words from Mayla Strong I immediately related to her. And even though shes a bit younger and more impulsive than I am, I stayed with her through the whole book, feeling her struggles, laughing at her joys, rooting her on as she tries to fix things.Nobody can handle serious subjects quite like Virginia Smith. She deals with several hot button topics here, but with such a light touch that it never comes off as preachy. This is just Mayla, living her life, trying to be the person God wants her to be, and hitting a few speed bumps along the way. Smith has written a funny, touching sequel to Just As I Am. If you havent read it, you will still enjoy Sincerely, Mayla., but youll probably enjoy Maylas story a lot more if you know how she started.

This is one of my favorite books of 2008. It's fun, comical, and down to earth. Sincerely, Mayla, centers around Mayla Strong. A woman whose life is falling apart, while she's being sucked into her friends problems. There was only one thing to do--take a vacation. Off she goes to visit family where she can rest and relax. There is little rest and relaxation happening on this trip. Not only do her friends literally show up on the doorstep, but she discovers that her family has their own problems. Control freak Mayla tries to solve every ones problems her way. Before long she realizes it should be God's way, and God will work everything out. This should be in every beach bag and on every summer reading list. It's an easy read that tackles some very difficult and heavy issues without being disrespectful. It's also a great read for all your unsaved friends as it shows a positive and Biblical way to handle certain ills in society. This is the sequel to Just As I Am. I haven't read that one yet, but I'm going to drop it in my suitcase for my own vacation.

Author/Artist Review

Author: Virginia Smith
Located in: central Kentucky
Submitted: January 25, 2008

Tell us a little about yourself.  I'm a writer of humorous novels, a speaker, and an avid scuba diver. I launched my career as a writer in the summer of 2006. Since that time I've received contracts for eight novels. I write in two genres:contemporary fiction and mysteries. Sincerely, Mayla (March 2008) is my fifth release, following Stuck in the Middle (February 2008), Just As I Am (February 2006), Murder by Mushroom (August 2007), and Bluegrass Peril (December 2007).

What was your motivation behind this project?  The main character in my debut novel, JUST AS I AM, is so vivid and alive in my mind just wouldn’t step quietly back into anonymity. And after people got to know Mayla Strong in the first book, I received tons of letters and emails asking, “What happens between Mayla and Pastor Paul? I have to know!” Well, I wanted to know, too! So I wrote SINCERELY, MAYLA.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  I hope people enjoy spending time with Mayla. I want them to laugh and maybe even shed a tear or two before the book ends. I strongly believe that fiction should entertain, not preach, so I hope all of my books are primarily entertaining. But because I am a Christian, and because Mayla is a Christian, elements of God’s grace show up naturally in the story. So if someone wants to learn a thing or two, they can. But mostly, I just hope they like the story!

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  I got to spend more time with Mayla, which is always a hoot! And I learned a little about myself as I guided her through some sticky family relationships. We really do emulate the behaviors we’ve observed throughout life from our family members. In order to break the chain, we have to first become conscious of those behaviors, and then make an effort to change. I learned a lot about myself as Mayla was learning about herself.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  SINCERELY, MAYLA does stand alone, so if you haven’t read JUST AS I AM, don’t let that stop you from reading the second one. But you’ll like book 2 much better if you’ve already met the characters in book 1, so the two-book set is a great deal!
