Publisher's Description

The fact of the Lost Ark of the Covenant is one of the grant historical mysteries of all time. To believers, the Ark is the legendary vesel holding the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments. The Bible contains hundreds of references to the Ark's power to level mountains, destroy armies, and lay waste to cities. The Ark itself, however, mysteriously disappears from recorded history sometime after the building of the Temple of Solomon.
After ten years of searching through the dusty archives of Europe and the Middle East, as well as braving the real-life dangers of a bloody civil war in Ethiopia, Graham Hancock has succeeded where scores of others have failed. This intrepid journalist has tracked down the true story behind the myths and legends -- revealing where the Ark is today, how it got there, and why it remains hidden.

I have always considered the Ark of the Covenant one of the most awe-inspiring relics in the Old Testament, so naturally this book caught my attention when I came across it. However, as I read through the first part of the book it became very apparent that it was not written from a Christian perspective, but by a journalist who seems to have watched "Raiders of the Lost Ark" a few too many times. I found a lot of the history of Ethiopia to be very interesting, although it seems to be drowned in a sea of legends. I became increasingly annoyed with the author since he would continuously make far-fetched connections between the Ark and various other places in the world. He connects the Ark to France, the Knights Templar, Freemasonry, Egypt, Atlantis, and sorcery among other diverse people, places, and events. He has little patience and shows no respect for foreign cultures and traditions (he tries to barge his way into Holy of Holies in an Ethiopic church just because he couldn't gain permission from the church priests). The nail in the coffin came more than half way through the book when the author began showing his beliefs that Moses was a magician/sorcerer. I finally had to stop reading this book when he speculated that the baptism of Jesus was Jesus' initiation into a magical "cult," in which Moses had been a member of (according to the author). I no longer care whether or not the Ark will be found, or even if it is still on this earth. My hope is that it will stay hidden from people like Graham Hancock.
