This is the best product I have seen for homeschooling. The teacher's book is detailed giving many examples to teach on a board, before the child works in the workbook. Also, each chapter is detailed noting may grammar rules/uses, with individual lessons in each chapter. The book identifies the eight parts of speech and has the child labeling sentences, etc. Their are oral builders, jingles to help with memory of parts of speech. Each chapter has a skill test and application test. Also, their are writing prompts with teaching the developments of each type of writing. Lastly, there is an effective teacher planning box for each chapter. This is great solid set building a foundation which will ease them with confidence into the next years of school and college. This is a well developed book worth adding to your homeschooling years.
This is a complete grammar book. You do not need to supplement with other books for extra practice. My kids enjoy it, we have done levels 1-7 so far. Last year just out of couriosity we switch grammar textbooks and tried 4 diff. grammar books!! none worked as well as Shurley English and my kids were asking to use Shurley again.
I have a "mixed" review for both level 3 and 7 of Shurley English. I'm a busy Mom of 7 kids. So a HUGE factor for me when considering a curriculum is the amount of time it takes to teach a lesson. Although this curriculum said that it only took 30 to 45 minutes, I found that to NOT be true. On a good day, with very little interruptions I think it took an hour to 1.5 hours just to teach...then they had to finish the assignments. I'm not sure what (if anything) I'm doing wrong, but this is entirely too long for me!That being said, this is the best grammar curriculum I've ever used. My children learned far more this year about grammar and writing than they have ever learned before. Some people have said the jingles are dorky...and maybe they are. But they work. For me, that's the bottom line. I wish the 7th grade curriculum had come with a workbook though so when we are doing our question and answer flows (which is basically diagramming sentences but in a different form)my son wouldn't need to recopy the sentences from the teacher's manual (technically, I'm supposed to write them on the "board" and then he's supposed to copy from there...simply a waste of time).
