My father tells me that he saw these films in church over 20 years ago, before the invention of video! (Wow - he's old!) Now they are available for home viewing to a whole new generation. After 40 years of study in theology, philosophy, history, and the arts, Dr. Schaeffer shares his knowledge and expertise with us to present his analysis of hte rise and decline of Western thought and culture.

Carrying us through 2,000 years of human history, Dr. Schaeffer proves the importance of God's absolute truth as revealed to us in Christ through the Bible. He delivers his message while walking through the beautiful European countryside or visiting cathedrals, museums, and other historical sites. Theatrical film footage is woven into the narrative to add drama. With the vast amount of reading that has to be done in high school, it isnice to have a break and enjoy watching a film. The presentation of the message is a memorable one. I learned that a civilization that rejects God eventually crumbles from the inside out. The same happens in the lives of individuals, for without Christ man is left with no hope or direction. Man will try to find or put meaning into life but it will never truly satisfy him.

This series includes two DVDs, each featuring five segments, such as the Roman Age, the Reformation, the Scientific Age, and the Age of Personal Peace and Affluence. An interview with Francis and Edith Schaeffer introduces us to the work of L'Abri Fellowship. They share their thoughts about living with suffering and sickness and about recognizing God's leading in our lives.

Two DVDs, 6 hours total. —Sophia

Very good series. It is interesting to see how things have not changed much since the early days. Man makes the same mistakes because of sin. Dr. Schaeffer really knows his stuff.

The content is excellent, with verbiage the same as in Schaeffer's book. However, the reproduction of the video should be better; - better quality than is present on the DVD. It is clearly very dated in production, but very current in content. Surely technology available should be able to clean it up a bit. I intend to use it in leading a young adult class, stressing the similarity of the present world situation with historical facts.

This series is a little dated, but the truth never really gets old! Francis Schaeffer makes an outstanding presentation explaining how the world arrived at the mess it is now. He also shows the only way out of this mess. Ten episodes is a little long in today's six sessions and out norm. But it's worth the extra effort. It really is!

The film assumes that you have some historical knowledge of the church and world events that were shaped by the church or shaped the church

Dr. Schaeffer's treatment of slavery in America is facile and predictable. For a more balanced, insightful analysis consult Dabney and Bledsoe. Otherwise, his overview is deep and penetrating. I'd highly recommend this series to anyone.

Awesome! Schaeffer provides a very succinct explanation from the Roman Empire to the present. Even though the film was produced 25+ years ago, it is very relevant for our day. If you are a history "buff" in any way, this is a great find. More importantly, it truly does cause the viewer to think about "how should we then live?" with the key being our relationship to Jesus Christ.

One of my favorite teaching series. The DVD version is much more convenient than the older VHS version. Obviously it is shorter from the original book format, but many of its visuals are well done, well chosen and occasionally just brilliantly conceived. Allowing printing of the study guide from the DVD is useful as the older guides were rather bulky. Each viewing of the series shows how well thought out to the appropriate conclusions Dr. Schaeffer's work was and is in describing where society has been and is yet going while denying God's rule and its Christian world view.
