Publisher's Description

Lighthearted Historical Romance From a Rising Star

No one steps on Archer land. Not if they value their life. But when Meredith Hayes overhears a lethal plot to burn the Archer brothers off their ranch, a twelve-year-old debt compels her to take the risk.

Fourteen years of constant vigilance hardens a man. Yet when Travis Archer confronts a female trespasser with the same vivid blue eyes as the courageous young girl he once aided, he can't bring himself to send her away. And when an act of sacrifice leaves her injured and her reputation in shreds, gratitude and guilt send him riding to her rescue once again.

Four brothers. Four straws. One bride. Despite the fact that Travis is no longer the gallant youth Meredith once dreamed about, she determines to stand by his side against the enemy that threatens them both. But will love ever be hers? Or will Travis always see her merely as a short-straw bride?

I have forgotten how enjoyable Karen Witemeyer's books can be! I've read several of her books (before I started my blog), so I had an idea of what to expect, but this was fantastic! The story was fast-paced and exciting. I had a hard time putting the book down.

Travis Archer and Meredith Hayes make a great hero/heroine pair. Both characters are well written and full of depth. Travis has been in charge of his three brothers for as long as he can remember. He is the take charge kind of guy that I can respect. His loyalty and love for his family runs deep. Meredith is sweet, caring, and gentle until you get her dander up. Then she's full of spirit and fire! Watching their romance grow in the midst of trouble was fun and sweet.

Karen Witemeyer artfully weaves in a deep truth throughout the story: trust. Both Meredith and Travis learn that putting your trust in God is the only way to really live a happy and content life. For Travis, that burden of protecting his family is not one he easily gets rid of. For Meredith, the patience that comes along with trusting the Lord knows what He's doing is harder than she thought. Both characters also have to learn that we, as Christians, are called to bear one another's burdens.

Overall, I highly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the next book in the Archer Brothers series. After all, I have to know what happens to Crockett, Jim, and Neill!

Meredith Hayes is at spunky as a 10 year old girl in her position can be. Being raised by her aunt and uncle doesn't exactly endear her to her peers at school and in the community. The only friend she has is her cousin, Cassandra. When an accident lands her at the mercy of the infamous Archer brothers, her life is forever changed by Travis, the eldest. Gruff and responsible for the well being of his brothers, he kindly helps Meredith in her time of need and gets her safely home.

Ten years later, Meredith has made Travis quite a hero. In her mind, no matter how intimidating the Archer brothers are, Travis will always hold a special place in her heart. So when she hears their lives and livelihood are in danger, she does the only thing that seems right. She goes to the Archer ranch -alone - to warn them. Once there, things just start to go wrong. The brothers want proof and Meredith has nothing to offer them except her word. Travis detains her, demanding a thorough explanation. Before they know it, she is staying the night. Reputation in tatters, they draw straws to see who will claim her as his bride. Will the brother that picks the short straw actually want her? Or is the straw picking method just giving her as a bride to the loser?

This novel with as funny as it was serious, and the characters will really grow on you. The brothers are each unique in their own way, and Meredith brings a female presence to love-starved boys that became men all on their own. Journey with the Archer boys, Meredith and her crazy escapades, and all the love and laughter in between.

I loved "Stealing the Preacher" so much that when I found out it was the second book in a series, I went to my local library to find a copy of "Short-Straw Bride", the first book in the series. What a treasure! "Short-Straw Bride" is one of my favorite books now!

I loved the way Meredith helped Travis see life from a broader perspective. I loved the gentle romance and willingness to do what's right in helping others. I enjoyed this book so much that I've already read it twice—it is so well written that it can stand up to a second read.

I strongly encourage you to treat yourself to this great story by a gem of a writer, Karen Witemeyer. And don't forget to read book 2--"Stealing the Preacher"—another great book by this great author. I just wish there were more than 5 stars I could give these books!
